A smart bettor knows to monitor line movements as the week goes along. Often when the bet is made is nearly as important as who the bet is on. Here are Week 15’s biggest spread moves and the likely reasons for said moves.
LOS ANGELES RAMS (-1) @ DALLAS COWBOYS
OPENING: LOS ANGELES RAMS (+3) @ DALLAS COWBOYS
The Rams bounced back from their 45-6 loss to the Ravens and began looking like the Rams of old. Following a 34-7 win over Arizona and a 28-12 win over Seattle, they enter this contest on a bit of a hot streak.
The Cowboys fall on the other end of the spectrum, having lost three in a row. They also haven’t beaten a team with a winning record this year and the Rams are 8-5.
JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS (+6.5) @ OAKLAND RAIDERS
OPENING: JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS (+3.5) @ OAKLAND RAIDERS
For a second consecutive season, the Jaguars seem disinterested with nothing to play for but pride and draft position. Over their last nine games, they’re 2-7 with their only wins coming over the Bengals and Jets.
The Raiders are caught up in their own cold streak after losing three in a row by an average of 28 points per game. However, they’re moving to Las Vegas next year and this will be their final game in front of the Oakland crowd. They have a considerable psychological edge.
CHICAGO BEARS (+4) @ GREEN BAY PACKERS
OPENING: CHICAGO BEARS (+6.5) @ GREEN BAY PACKERS
The Bears have won three in a row and everyone saw them put a beating on the Cowboys in Week 14’s Thursday night game. More importantly, Mitchell Trubisky looked like a new man, which will give Chicago bettors added confidence.
Though the Bears have only covered four of their last 10 as underdogs in Green Bay, they did cover last year in Matt Nagy’s first trip there as head coach.
DENVER BRONCOS (+10) @ KANSAS CITY CHIEFS
OPENING: DENVER BRONCOS (+12) @ KANSAS CITY CHIEFS
This line movement pretty much begins and ends with Drew Lock. The Broncos have two surprising wins with him taking the snaps which, by itself, normally wouldn’t be enough to affect a line. What really got everyone’s attention was the decimation of the Texans in Houston.
The Broncos are also arguably better than their record considering how many tight games they’ve lost. In addition, they’ve covered seven of 10 as underdogs in Kansas City and they never got more than nine points over that stretch.
MINNESOTA VIKINGS (-1) @ LOS ANGELES CHARGERS
OPENING: MINNESOTA VIKINGS (-3) @ LOS ANGELES CHARGERS
The clearest explanation is the Chargers’ recent domination of Jacksonville. The Vikings have also struggled on the west coast, going 1-6 in the Mountain and Pacific time zones during Mike Zimmer’s tenure.
Minnesota does have two things working in their favor. They have something to play for, while the Chargers are eliminated from playoff contention. They’ll also get Adam Thielen back from a hamstring injury. He hasn’t been in uniform since Week 9.
SEATTLE SEAHAWKS (-6) @ CAROLINA PANTHERS
OPENING: SEATTLE SEAHAWKS (-4.5) @ CAROLINA PANTHERS
Seattle is still very much in contention for one of the top two seeds in the NFC. They’ll clinch one if they win out, so they’re certainly not lacking motivation.
Carolina’s first game without Ron Rivera went poorly. They trailed the entire time and were basically out of it midway through the third quarter. It was their fifth loss in a row and only one was by fewer than eight points.
