Our second NFL Wild Card Game on Saturday comes with its own storyline, as the Miami Dolphins travel to the Show Me State to show them exactly how much better they are than their record against winning teams when the face the defending Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs.
This is another attempt at a Tyreek Hill revenge game against the team that sent him packing for picks that they did not use to bring in talented wide receivers for Patrick Mahomes to throw the ball to. Also, there’s the Taylor Swift thing, something that really seems to drive the actual worst people on the planet a little crazy. You know, that a hot rich woman shows up to a game an roots for her boyfriend’s team. Real villain type stuff. It’s obvious she’s on the headset, calling plays for Andy Ried. She’s in practice oiling up footballs so the receivers can’t catch them. That has to be it, right? Dads, Brads, Chads? Your thoughts?
As two of the old AFL teams, it might shock you to discover this will just be the 33rd time they’ve met up and just the fourth time they’ve faced off in the postseason. They are a perfect 16-16 against each other, with Miami holding a 3-0 advantage in the postseason. Kansas City has won the last four meetings going back to 2014, including a 21-14 victory back on Nov. 5.
In the win, Patrick Mahomes was 20 of 30 passing for 185 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. Isaih Pacheco rushed 16 times for 66 yards. Noah Gray caught three passes for 34 yards. Rashee Rice hauled in two passes for 17 yards and a TD.
Tua Tagavailoa was 21 of 34 passing for 193 yards and a TD with no picks in the loss. Raheem Mostert rushed 12 times for 85 yards and a score. Tyreek Hill caught eight passes for 62 yards. Cedrick Wilson caught one 31-yard touchdown pass.
MIAMI DOLPHINS AT KANSAS CITY CHIEFS (-4.5, O/U: 43.5)
Location: GEMA Field at Arrowhead, Kansas City, Mo.
Broadcast: Peacock
Kickoff: Jan. 13, 8 p.m.
MIAMI DOLPHINS (11-6)
The Dolphins had a chance to secure the AFC East, the No. 2 seed in the AFC, pick up their second victory over a winning team and possibly keep the Buffalo Bills out of the playoffs and blew it, losing 21-14 at home. It happened a week after they were blown off the field by the Baltimore Ravens 56-19. Tua Tagivailoa was 17 of 27 passing for 173 yards, one touchdown and two picks in the loss. He was not sacked. De’von Achane rushed 10 times for 56 yards and a TD. Tyreek Hill had seven receptions for 82 yards and a score. The defense picked off Josh Allen twice and was sacked him three times.
KANSAS CITY CHIEFS (11-6)
Kansas City rested its starters with the AFC West and its AFC seeding already decided, but still picked up a victory over the hapless Los Angeles Chargers, winning 13-12. Blaine Gabbert was 15 of 30 passing for 154 yards, no touchdowns and an interception in the win. La’Mical Perine rushed 21 times for 76 yards. Mecole Hardman, Jr. caught six passes for 77 yards. The defense sacked Easton Stick three times.
THE PICK
Miami absolutely has the horses to win this game and, if it was played on neutral field, I might actually go with them. But it’s in Kansas City, likely enjoying their only home playoff game of this run and in horrible weather. I’m going with the Chiefs. Chiefs 26, Dolphins 20
