Odds Show Winston Not Expected To Be Bucs Week 1 Starter

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have a conundrum on their hands: what should they do with Jameis Winston? The volatile quarterback led the NFL in passing in the 2019 season and was the only player to throw for more than 5000 yards (5,109) but he also led the league in interceptions (30) with a whopping seven of them being returned for touchdowns.

It’s clear that head coach Bruce Arians would rather not deal with this volatility anymore and the team could be moving on. At the same time, Winston is still quite tantalizing because he can be an elite passer if someone can get him to cut down on the mistakes. BetOnline has posted odds as to whether Winston will be starting in Week 1 of 2020 for the Bucs and at least for now, the answer to that appears to be a resounding ‘no’.

WILL JAMEIS WINSTON START WEEK 1 FOR THE TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS?

YES: +170
NO: -250

BUCS LOOKING AT RIVERS?

Throughout the majority of the offseason, the general rumor was that Rivers was heading to the Bucs. After all, Arians is a quarterback whisperer who has extended the shelf life of veteran passers before (see: Carson Palmer). Also, Rivers moved his family to Florida, which gave the impression that he’d like to be closer to them.

As of now, though, Rivers is favored to land with the Indianapolis Colts, according to the odds, and the Bucs are right behind in second place. The Bucs landing spot makes a lot of sense but the Colts could pry him away. They have the better offensive line and that’s what might be a better spot for Rivers in the long run.

WHAT ABOUT TEDDY BRIDGEWATER?

One of the most bizarre reports coming out of the NFL Combine was that the Bucs are interested in Teddy Bridgewater. According to JC Cornell of The Draft Network, the Bucs are a frontrunner for Bridgewater. At that point, it would be unclear if Bridgewater is merely coming in to be a backup, someone who is going to possible compete with and push Winston for the starting position or simply be handed the starting role right off the bat.

If you’re betting on Winston to be the Week 1 starter in Tampa Bay, this figures to be a good option. He can beat Bridgewater out for the job in training camp.

IS ANDY DALTON AN OPTION?

It’s clear that the Cincinnati Bengals will move on from Andy Dalton but the question is where will he land? The Bengals will be trying to trade Dalton and Tampa Bay could be a great landing spot. They have two dynamic wide receivers in Mike Evans and Chris Godwin, a couple of quality tight ends in O.J. Howard and Cameron Brate, and a head coach who knows how to get the most out of quarterbacks.

Dalton was bad last season but the Bengals were the worst team in the NFL. With a much better cast and coach around him, he would be a great fit in Tampa Bay. And while he’s never lead the league in passing yards like Winston, he also doesn’t have a propensity for mistakes either. For his career, he has nearly a 2:1 touchdown to interception ratio with 204 touchdowns and just 118 interceptions.
