Odds Suggest Kitchens Fired At The End Of The Season

The Cleveland Browns were expecting to be a Super Bowl contender this season. At the very least, they were hoping to win the AFC North and return to the playoffs. After Sunday’s loss – their third in a row – they’ve fallen to 2-5 and have embarrassed themselves after eight weeks of action.

That begs the question as to whether or not head coach Freddie Kitchens will be back next season? At this point, that’s a real question mark as he’s been an unmitigated disaster in his first season.

BROWNS EMBARRASSED ON SUNDAY

One of the biggest reasons why Kitchens is not likely to be back is because the Browns are not only losing games, they’re getting embarrassed. Sunday was their latest escapade as they returned off of a bye week to visit the New England Patriots. The Browns managed three turnovers on three consecutive snaps in the first quarter and found themselves trailing 17-0 before the first frame was even finished.

There’s nothing to be ashamed of when it comes to losing in New England – they’re the best team in the league – but the Browns humiliated themselves with three turnovers, 13 penalties and two awful failed challenges.

It gets worse, though, as the Browns, down 17 in the fourth quarter and backed up in their zone, got stuffed on a 3rd & 11. That set up a 4th & 11 and Kitchens decided to punt. The punt team didn’t get the ball off in time, which forced a 4th & 16. Bizarrely, Kitchens sent the offense back out, needing 16 yards to go. They took a sack and turned it over on downs.

It’s decisions like this one or the draw on 4th & 8 against the Los Angeles Rams earlier in the season, or simply having his team unprepared on a weekly basis that has Kitchens on the chopping block.

OFFENSE HAS REGRESSED

It’s hard to believe that the Browns offense is struggling so much. After all, this unit thrived under Kitchens last season. However, we’re learning that while Kitchens might be a good offensive coordinator, he’s a terrible head coach.

Odell Beckham Jr. was supposed to be a superstar receiver that put this Browns offense over the top. Under Kitchens’ watch, OBJ has looked nothing more than average. He has just one touchdown on the season and 488 receiving yards through seven games. It’s hard to believe that Eli Manning made him look better.

As for quarterback Baker Mayfield, no player has more turnovers than him since the start of 2018. He has just six touchdowns and 12 interceptions on the season. The offense scored 40 points against the Baltimore Ravens but has averaged just 15.5 points per game in all of their other contests. If that continues, Kitchens is going to get fired.

SCHEDULE EASES UP

If you’re thinking about betting ‘Yes’ with this prop, one thing to consider is that the Browns schedule is about to get a lot easier. Here’s a look at what they’ve got left:

WEEK 11: VS STEELERS (2-4)
WEEK 12: VS DOLPHINS (0-6)
WEEK 13: @ STEELERS (2-4)
WEEK 14: VS BENGALS (0-8)
WEEK 15: @ CARDINALS (3-4-1)
WEEK 16: VS RAVENS (5-2)
WEEK 17: AT BENGALS (0-8)

If they can win six of these games – and that seems possible – that might be enough to save Kitchens job. However, this team will have to get hot and really turn things around from how they’ve played so far.
