Under Review Show – Conference Championship Preview

The Under Review Show would love to turn the calendar back a month and live in 2019 for a little longer. In November and December, the Triple Teaseburgers were tender and juicy, coming in at a steady rate and making everyone plenty of money. The meat has gone bad and the buns are stale in 2020 though, as the Under Review Crew failed to convert on a third straight Triple Teaseburger during the Divisional Round last week.

Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens did the hosts in. Tennessee went into Baltimore and hammered the Ravens 28-12, easily covering all numbers and ruining all teaser bets. The Titans were 9.5-point underdogs per the NFL betting odds, but they were the better team from the outset. Jackson made uncharacteristic mistakes, and Tennessee took full advantage of those miscues. Derrick Henry continued his remarkable run, seemingly wearing power armor with the way defenders are bouncing off him, and Tennessee wore Baltimore down to make it to the AFC Championship Game.

As is usually the case with teasers, that was the only loss of the three legs. Kansas City overcame a 24-0 deficit to hammer Houston 51-31, and Green Bay was always in front of the teaser number against Seattle at Lambeau Field.

Since there are just two games this week, there is no chance to bet a Triple Teaseburger. and that might be a good thing given the recent returns. Instead, the Under Review hosts are just going to bet both games the good old fashioned way.

Kansas City laying 7.5 points is the pick in the AFC Championship Game. Patrick Mahomes has been the best quarterback in the NFL the last two years, and Ryan Tannehill isn’t even in his weight class. Tannehill did not pass for more than 100 yards in either playoff game to get Tennessee to this point, as the Titans simply ground down their opponent behind Derrick Henry.

Mahomes showed that no lead is safe against the Chiefs last week. Kansas City was down 24-0 at home to Houston with 10 minutes left in the second quarter, but Mahomes tossed four touchdown passes before halftime to stun the Texans going into the locker room. The Chiefs went on to win 51-31 to make it to the AFC Championship Game for a second straight season.

There are some concerns for the Chiefs ahead of this game. Standout defensive tackle Chris Jones is questionable with a calf injury, and he is the key to the run defense. Kansas City allowed 4.9 YPC this year, and this front seven desperately needs Jones available to help stop Henry. However, Mahomes is likely going to be too much to handle. Tennessee’s defense bent but didn’t break against Lamar Jackson and the Ravens, but Mahomes could shatter it into pieces.

The Packers are getting 7.5 points on the road against San Francisco in the NFC Championship Game, and our hosts love Aaron Rodgers getting more than a touchdown in this spot. Underdogs of six points or more are 11-5 ATS in conference championship games over the past 20 years, and this moment won’t be too much for the indefatigable Rodgers.

Green Bay has looked great against quality opponents aside from San Francisco this season, but the Packers were dismantled when they went to Santa Clara in late November. Rodgers and the offense failed to finish with more than 200 total yards in a 37-8 victory, but it’s rare to see a defense do that to Rodgers twice in one season.

San Francisco doesn’t blow out opponents. After hammering the Packers, the 49ers defeated New Orleans, Los Angeles, and Seattle by a combined 10 points in their last three wins of the regular season. The 49ers are likely to win this game, but it will be closer than the experts think, making the Packers the pick.
