Who Will Be Jay Gruden’s Replacement In Washington?

The ‘other shoe’ finally dropped for Washington Redskins head coach Jay Gruden today. Reportedly on the ‘hot seat’ since the start of the 2019 NFL season, Gruden was dismissed one day after the Skins dropped to 0-5 with a 33-7 home loss to the New England Patriots. Assistant head coach/offensive line coach Bill Callahan has been named as interim head coach.

Although Gruden ‘fell on the knife’ for the Redskins’ struggles this season the team has been underachieving since Dan Snyder bought the storied franchise in 1999. In the 20 years since the Redskins have made the playoffs only five times. In the 20 years before Snyder became owner, the Redskins were one of the dominant franchises in the NFL with 12 playoff appearances, 5 Super Bowl appearances and three Super Bowl victories.

Most likely, the only reason that Gruden survived the offseason was the Skins injury plagued 2018 campaign. The big blow was a potentially career ending injury to starting quarterback Alex Smith in the 10th game of the season. Washington was 6-3 at the time and that convinced the Redskins management braintrust to give Gruden a shot to reprise that time of early season performance.

Speculation will now turn to Gruden’s long term replacement. Objectively speaking, the team is a mess. Any new head coach will face the profound challenge of rebuilding along with a couple of ‘extenuating circumstances’ to make things all the more difficult. One of these is the necessity of re-engaging the team’s passionate fanbase meaning that ‘signs of life’ under a new coach would need to appear quickly. The biggest challenge for a head coach might be dealing with owner Dan Snyder and general manager Bruce Allen. Snyder has been through 8 head coaches during his time as owner and while he’s been more patient with Gruden that would definitely be something a new head coach would be mindful of.

BetOnline.ag has posted a NFL regular season prop with odds to be the Washington Redskins head coach in Week 1 of the 2020 regular season. There are nearly 50 betting interests listed ranging from favorite Eric Bieniemy (+350) to longshots like Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney (+25000) and former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo (+5000). Here are a few realistic candidates to take over as the Redskins next head coach:

BEST BETS TO BECOME THE NEXT WASHINGTON REDSKINS HEAD COACH

MIKE TOMLIN (+1400)

ESPN quoted an ‘unnamed source’ reportedly close to Redskins’ owner Snyder who suggested that any candidate list would include Tomlin along with Tampa Bay defensive coordinator Todd Bowles and Kansas City offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy. Tomlin is a first rate coach but in 2019 the Pittsburgh Steelers gave him a very tepid two year contract extension. With the sun possibly setting on the Ben Roethlisberger era it could be that Tomlin would consider a new challenge. Bonus points–Tomlin’s son Dino attends the University of Maryland less than an hour away from DC in College Park.

JIM HARBAUGH (+2500)

Harbaugh is currently the head coach at Michigan but as the gap between the Wolverines and Big Ten powerhouse Ohio State grows there’s talk that he might be on the ‘hot seat’. Harbaugh might play the ‘you can’t fire me because I quit’ card and take on a high profile (and no doubt high paying) challenge with the Skins. Michigan would be stupid to let Harbaugh skip town but with the NFL prop odds showing him at +2500 he’s available at a nice price.

JOSH MCDANIELS (+1000)

New England’s offensive coordinator is a former NFL head coach and took a gig as Indianapolis head coach in 2018 before he had a change of heart and decided to return to Foxboro. The Redskins ownership and management have a first hand account of what McDaniel’s offense is capable of after watching them put the final nail in Gruden’s coaching coffin on Sunday. His brief tenure as head coach in Denver was a disaster but nearly a decade of success under Bill Belichick in New England sure spiffs up his resume nicely.

KEVIN STEFANSKI (+2000)

Stefanski is currently the offensive coordinator with the Minnesota Vikings and he could be an excellent mentor for Washington quarterback prospect Dwayne Haskins. Stefanski has been on the Vikings’ coaching staff for 14 years though this is his first as offensive coordinator. One possible downside is that the Skins fanbase might be placated more by a bigger name hire.

TODD MONKEN (+3300)

The Cleveland Browns’ offensive coordinator has a good ‘buzz’ about his prospects as a future head coach. The future could be now. Monken has a lengthy resume as a coach in both college and the NFL. He was the head coach at Southern Miss for two years and previously served as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator. With Freddie Kitchens calling the plays in Cleveland, Monken might want something with more responsibility. Two big concerns–does he have a strong enough personality to deal with Snyder and GM Allen? Is he a big enough name to satisfy the Redskins faithful? The Washington Redskins head coach futures odds have him at a generous price so he might be worth a flyer.
