Will Cam Newton Be Back With The Carolina Panthers In 2020?

The difficult reality of Cam Newton’s career is embodied in the fact that Newton’s recent injuries aren’t an accident. Newton sacrificed his body and played the game like a running back, even though he was a quarterback, and putting his body on the line has quite possibly limited the life of his career. He’s now been injured in back-to-back seasons – and possibly even further back – so the question is will the Carolina Panthers move on from him? Remember, they have a couple of options now with Kyle Allen and rookie third-round pick Will Grier.

The betting lines still favor Newton returning to the Panthers but there could be value with him landing elsewhere.

CAROLINA PANTHERS
ODDS: +150

One of the reasons the Panthers are the favorite here is they and Newton have a powerful connection. Newton lifted the franchise to its second Super Bowl and therefore owns a special place in the hearts of not just fans, but also management. The Panthers won’t easily let him slip away – regardless of what the media is saying. They will make a good-faith effort to keep him. They also know that with Christian McCaffrey playing MVP-level football, Newton has the kind of sidekick who will enable him to thrive.

About a month ago, it looked like Allen might be a good long-term solution when he started off with four straight wins and threw for seven touchdowns and no picks. He’s lost three of four while throwing three touchdowns with nine interceptions. He might not be the long-term option they thought he could be. Also, Grier has shown almost nothing so far, so the Panthers may not have a replacement for Newton. Their chances of competing in 2020 would take a big hit if they let Newton go.

CHICAGO BEARS
ODDS: +250

The Panthers might be the favorite to be Newton’s landing spot in 2020 but if there is a clear-cut No. 2 choice, the Bears make a lot of sense. Everyone in the NFL can see that the Bears’ quarterback situation is a total mess. Mitch Trubisky isn’t trusted by head coach Matt Nagy. Even though the Bears have invested so much money and draft capital in him, they aren’t allowing him to take many risks in games. That is alarming. The other key point is that backup Chase Daniel isn’t being given chances to play when Trubisky has been healthy but ineffective.

The rest of the Bears roster is ready to compete for a Super Bowl. The defense is strong, the running game has quality options in David Montgomery and Tarik Cohen and the receiving corps has playmakers with Allen Robinson, Anthony Miller, Taylor Gabriel and Trey Burton. All that’s missing is a competent signal-caller. Newton could offer that.

TENNESSEE TITANS
ODDS: +900

The intriguing option which is lower on the odds list is the Titans. The reason for it is because the offensive system used in Tennessee is not hugely different from what the Carolina Panthers currently used, but beyond that, the Titans know it is time to move on from Marcus Mariota. Ryan Tannehill has been decent but he’s not someone who really moves the needle. Newton offers this team some star power, which they desperately lack. He’s a born leader who can immediately become the face of the franchise. For Newton, it wouldn’t be very different than how things are in Carolina: the Titans are a run-oriented offense and they throw when necessary. Some other times might be worried about Newton transitioning to a new system at this point in his career. In Tennessee, that’s not a concern.
