The New York Giants grabbed headlines at the 2019 NFL Draft when they surprised a lot of people with their selection of Daniel Jones. As we look ahead to Thursday’s NFL Draft, will the Giants again surprise? They’re favored to draft an offensive lineman to protect Jones but maybe they’ve got another ace up their sleeve.
JEDRICK WILLS
ODDS TO BE GIANTS FIRST PICK: +110
The offensive lineman out of Alabama has moved up on betting markets as the player most likely to be the first offensive lineman picked in the draft. This shift in the betting markets would seem to point to the Giants, specifically general manager Dave Gettleman, thinking Wills is their guy. Keep in mind that Gettleman confounded everyone in the NFL last year in the draft when he picked Daniel Jones of Duke at No. 6 in the first round, instead of Dwayne Haskins or other quarterbacks projected to be better than Jones was. Gettleman has his own thought process; he is not a conventional thinker. If he has fallen in love with Wills as a prospect, nothing is going to dissuade him. The Giants are likely to take an offensive lineman precisely because they need someone to protect Daniel Jones and show the quarterback that they are very serious about giving him help and support on the roster. Wills, though, might now be the specific lineman Gettleman wants to bring in.
TRISTAN WIRFS
ODDS TO BE GIANTS FIRST PICK: +250
Wirfs still graded out extremely well at the NFL Combine. On merit, he seems to be the player the Giants ought to take with this pick. Yet, Gettleman didn’t go the conventional route last year, so why would he suddenly become conventional now? If Wills isn’t the pick, one would have to think that Wirfs is the second-best bet. However, with Gettleman calling the shots, don’t be too certain that you know what he is going to do… which leads us to the next selection on the board.
ISAIAH SIMMONS
ODDS TO BE GIANTS FIRST PICK: +350
The Clemson safety/hybrid could really improve the Giants’ back seven in a division with Dak Prescott and Carson Wentz, but the Giants’ first need would seem to be the offensive line, the position group they have struggled with the most since their most recent Super Bowl championship in February of 2012. Logic points to the Giants fixing their O-line first and foremost, and trying to get a defensive player later in the draft. Gettleman, however, might have other ideas, so if he does, Simmons would be the defensive player who makes the most sense for the Giants.
THE FIELD +500
ODDS TO BE GIANTS FIRST PICK: +500
The Dave Gettleman experience teaches us to not think you know what he’s going to do. Gettleman is one of the most unpredictable personnel men in the league. If he throws a curveball and picks someone you weren’t expecting, don’t be too shocked about it.
MEKHI BECTON
ODDS TO BE GIANTS FIRST PICK: +1000
The hulking yet agile offensive lineman is probably a top-two lineman on a lot of teams’ draft boards. Some teams likely have him graded higher than Wills. Maybe one or two teams have him graded higher than Wirfs. He is still likely to be a top-10 pick because of his quality, so don’t write him off entirely.
