With Marrone Reportedly Fired, Which NFL Coach Is Next?

As we rapidly approach the end of the NFL season, it’s becoming quite clear that a number of head coaches are going to get fired soon. The latest news comes from Jacksonville where the Jaguars have reportedly informed head coach Doug Marrone that he won’t be back with the team next season, according to ESPN. BetOnline.ag has a whole host of props up on the next wave of coaches to be fired, so let’s take a look at the big names on the board:

WILL ANTHONY LYNN GET FIRED BY WEEK 1 OF 2020?

YES -150
NO +110

Anthony Lynn will probably stay on in 2020 with the Los Angeles Chargers, even though this season was a total disaster. The main reason Lynn should get another season is that the Melvin Gordon holdout completely hijacked the Chargers’ year and got in the way of their plans. Injuries were also a great factor. This team is just one year removed from a 12-win campaign.

Owners should be able to give Lynn one more shot of returning the Chargers to the playoffs, which they made in the 2018 season. Of all the coaches mentioned in these props, Lynn’s job is comparatively the safest.

WILL FREDDIE KITCHENS GET FIRED BY WEEK 1 OF 2020?

YES -150
NO +110

This one is a little less certain than Anthony Lynn in Los Angeles, but Kitchens is still more likely to stay than to be fired. The Browns have ripped through lots of coaches in a relatively short period of time. This was Kitchens’ first full season as an NFL head coach but it was nothing short of disastrous. He’s supposed to be an offensive guru but he couldn’t figure out how to get Odell Beckham Jr. more involved or help this offense score points against some really bad teams. There’s video of the two of them arguing on the sidelines, Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry reportedly telling other teams to “come and get them”, the Myles Garrett helmet swinging incident, the fourth-and-eight draw play-call and the general failure of even getting this team to a winning record. With better options out there (like Ron Rivera), don’t be surprised if Kitchens gets canned.

WILL PAT SHURMUR GET FIRED BY WEEK 1 OF 2020?

YES -175
NO +135

This is a coach who will probably be fired. Pat Shurmur’s teams in New York have been so noticeably devoid of any sign of tangible improvements that it will be hard for the Giants to stand pat and keep everything the same in 2020. It is true that this was Daniel Jones’ first season in New York, which could be used as a reason to justify Shurmur getting another season, but Saquon Barkley has been part of the Giants’ roster, and the franchise took no discernible step forward. Ownership groups need to see real improvement in a roster even if the win-loss results aren’t there, and that hasn’t been part of the Giants’ season for many. It should seal Shurmur’s fate and ensue that the coach will be nothing more than an offensive coordinator for the rest of his NFL career.

WILL JASON GARRETT BE HEAD COACH OF THE COWBOYS IN WEEK 1 OF 2020?

NO -500
YES +300

This one is obvious now that Dallas cannot have a winning season and is unlikely to make the playoffs. An 8-8 record is far below the Cowboys’ expectations, and given all the key players they have on their roster, such as Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliott, it is clear that Dallas has to maximize its resources. Garrett’s mediocrity can no longer be tolerated, making this an easy decision for Jerry Jones to move on and find a new leader for his team.
