Edmonton Oilers Remain Favorites To Win Stanley Cup

We’re roughly two months into the 2024-25 NHL season, and it’s becoming clearer who the contenders are and who the pretenders may be. With Thanksgiving behind us, let’s take an updated look at the favorites to win hockey’s most coveted prize: the Stanley Cup. Have a look at the fresh odds on BetOnline,

Edmonton Oilers +800
The Oilers still hold the top spot among many pundits despite a less-than-stellar start to the season. They’ve strung together three wins just once so far this year and sit 5th in the Pacific Division with an 11-9-2 record. Add to that the fact that both Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid are sitting outside the top five in league scoring, and Edmonton has had to rely on depth scoring—oh wait—they have none. Coming off a 54-goal season, Zach Hyman is struggling this year with just 3 goals and 8 points through 20 games, and they have just one forward, Mattias Janmark, who has reached double digits in points, with exactly 10.

Now, it’s not all doom and gloom in Oil Country. Edmonton was in a similar position in the standings last season and ended up coming out of November on a heater. They went on a 16-game win streak, and McDavid finished the season with 132 points. All you have to do is make the playoffs to get a chance to hoist Lord Stanley’s Cup. The Edmonton Oilers will be playing postseason hockey and won’t be needing their razors for a while.

Carolina Hurricanes +850
Sitting second across the league heading into Thanksgiving, the Carolina Hurricanes have been a pleasant surprise. Many people thought that with the losses over the offseason, they wouldn’t be considered contenders and that we’d see an immediate step back. But it’s been the complete opposite for the Canes to start this campaign. Martin Necas has been otherworldly this year, getting on the scoresheet in all but three games thus far. He led the league with 37 points at the Thanksgiving mark and has been a huge reason the squad is first in the Metropolitan Division with a 16-5-1 record.

The real question is, can they carry this momentum into the playoffs and prove that they’re for real?

Florida Panthers +900
There was no Stanley Cup hangover for the Florida Panthers to start the season. They won eleven out of their first fifteen games and put themselves in a solid position to begin the new campaign. Sam Reinhart is proving his worth once again, leading the league at the time of Thanksgiving with 17 goals, and they have three players with at least 20 points. Not too shabby to start the season.

The main concern will be the number of games played by this club. Between the lengthy postseason run and the 2025 4 Nations Face-off, the Panthers could run into a fatigue issue. Add in the travel to Finland for the Global Series at the start of November, and there may be questions about whether they have the legs to get the job done once again.
