NHL Hockey: Vegas Golden Knights at Philadelphia Flyers
The season started with a fair amount of promise for the Philadelphia Flyers. They won their first two games of the season beating the Chicago Blackhawks and New Jersey Devils on home ice. Then reality set it. It turns out that the Flyers’ early wins said more about the pitiful state of the Devils and Blackhawks than anything else. Philadelphia has now lost four straight and following Monday’s game will play four of their next five on the road.
The jury is still out on Carter Hart as the starting goalie for Philadelphia. He hasn’t played badly despite his team’s record with a 2-2-1 record, a 2.59 goals against average and a 0.890 save percentage. The defense overall has been mediocre at best and their 3.00 goals per game allowed average is a reasonable #13-T but definitely not elite. A bigger problem has been on offense where the Flyers are the #24-T goals per game team in the league putting up just 2.5 per contest. When your team is scoring 1/2 goal per game than they’re giving up nothing good can come of it.
They’ll face a tough opponent on Monday as the Vegas Golden Knights come to town. The Golden Knights are currently 6-3-0 on the year and in a second place tie in the Pacific Division with the Anaheim Ducks. They’re just 2 points behind the red hot Edmonton Oilers and given the competitive nature of the Pacific this year with the #2 through #6 teams separated by a total of 3 points they’re unlikely to look past the struggling Flyers. Vegas turned in a solid 3-0 win at Pittsburgh last time out and are expected to once again go with Marc Andre Fleury in net. Fleury is 6-2-0 with a 2.18 goals against average and a 0.934 save percentage.
Vegas is in the first of a pair of back to back games with Chicago on deck for Tuesday but they’ve got plenty of time before a pair of big games this weekend. They’ll host the Colorado Avalanche at the T-Mobile Arena on Friday followed by a visit from the surprising Anaheim Ducks on Sunday. They should be able to get the win here.
