Talking to the NFL Network Monday morning, Chicago Bears head coach Matt Nagy praised his former first round pick at quarterback, Matthew Trubisky, for his approach to the upcoming quarterback competition with Nick Foles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“(Trubisky) has been really, really good in the fact that he’s taken this head-on,” Nagy told Good Morning Football. “He’s accepted it. He understands it. We’re all so competitive, but we’re human, too. There is a realness to the fact that ‘OK, you’re going to bring somebody else in here and have me compete’ initially it’s probably a shock. But then after that, it’s like, ‘let’s go.'”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But here\u2019s the thing. What else is he going to do?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Trubisky\u2019s problem isn\u2019t Foles, who the Bears acquired from the Jacksonville Jaguars back in March. His problem is horrible Chicago scouting and mismanagement that resulted in him being selected No. 2 overall in the 2017 NFL draft ahead of both Patrick Mahomes and Deshaun Watson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Those two men are now superstars. One already has an NFL MVP award and Super Bowl championship. Trubisky will likely open the season holding a Microsoft Surface tablet and setting new high scores on PUBG<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Back before the Senior Bowl in 2017, Clemson head coach Dab Swinney compared passing on Watson in the draft to passing on Michael Jordan<\/a>. He was, of course, right. Only the Bears had two shots at a \u201cJordan\u201d in that draft and will be lucky if they ended up with a Sam Bowie<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n After all, Bowie was a decent NBA player who enjoyed a 10-year career and started for most of it. At this point, Trubisky reaching Bowie status would be a dream scenario.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Today, Mahomes\u2019 is the odds-on favorite to claim the 2020-21 NFL MVP award at +400<\/a>. Watson is at +2500 but don\u2019t think for a second that\u2019s a bad bet. Trubisky is at +10,000 and, make no mistake, placing that bet would be akin to tossing your money into a Denny\u2019s toilet. Even without hitting the flush handle, there\u2019d be no saving it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There\u2019s no doubt to anyone, especially Nagy, that Foles will \u201cwin\u201d the QB competition with Trubisky. It\u2019s why they traded for him and his bloated contract. Nagy knows how to use Foles because Andy Reid did. And Reid guys like Nagy and Doug Pederson can get the best out of the oft-maligned former Arizona quarterback. With Reid, Nagy or Pederson calling the plays, Foles is 20-11 with a Super Bowl championship and MVP<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Foles is currently tied with A.J. Green at +600 as the No. 4 best bet<\/a> to win the NFL\u2019s Comeback Player of the Year in 2020 specifically because of that. With Chicago\u2019s skill players and defense, he can literally do what he\u2019s done in the past, play smart, limit his mistakes, and get that team into the playoffs at 10-6.<\/p>\n\n\n\n With the Bears declining Trubisky\u2019s fifth-year option back in May<\/a>, they\u2019ve all but thrown in the towel on his time in Chicago. That doesn\u2019t mean his career is over. Certainly he could end up a career back up, like former first rounder Blaine Gabbert, and pocket plenty of money and have a lengthy career.
