I don’t see that happening this time around, mainly because I never see Kansas City trailing. This is where Houston tops out as long as Bill O’Brien prowls the sidelines. Chiefs 38, Texans 23

How many times have the Patriots came into Indianapolis (or vice versa) only to end the Colts’ Super Bowl hopes? I’m not even looking it up. It happened a lot. But those Colts and Patriots teams were different, quarterbacked by other guys (Peyton Manning/Andrew Luck for Indy, Brady for New England). This is the same rivalry with a new coat of paint thanks to the addition of Newton to the Pats and Rivers to the Colts. I think Rivers and Indianapolis get the job done in an epic showdown. Colts 27, Patriots 24

NFC

Atlanta Falcons at Los Angeles Rams

Green Bay Packers at Philadelphia Eagles

Three of the four teams left in the NFC made it to the Super Bowl in the last half-decade, but only one of them won. Doug Pederson made it happen on the Philadelphia sideline and I think that will make all the difference in the Round 2 match up with Green Bay. I think the Eagles, with a healthy Carson Wentz, hold off Aaron Rodgers trying to make what might be his final real run at another Super Bowl. Eagles 23, Packers 20

The Rams and Falcons last met up in the playoffs three seasons ago, with Atlanta upsetting Los Angeles in the Colosseum in the Wild Card round in Sean McVay’s first season as head coach. McVay’s memory is, at this point, legendary and I think he’ll make a point of getting it right this time. Rams 38, Falcons 23

CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS

AFC

Indianapolis Colts at Kansas City Chiefs

For the third year in a row the Chiefs make it to the AFC Championship game, facing a different squad each time. Last season they overcame a 10-point deficit to knock off the surprising Titans. Rivers, having not been this close to a Super Bowl in nearly a decade and a half, makes a game of it and Indy hangs, but Kansas City and Patrick Mahomes are just too good. Chiefs 38, Colts 33

NFC

Philadelphia Eagles at Los Angeles Rams

Here’s a fun fact for you; Doug Pederson and Sean McVay have faced off against each other twice as head coaches. In those games, Pederson is 2-0, each with Nick Foles at quarterback. Both games were close and high scoring, with Philly winning 30-23 in 2018 and 45-35 in 2017.

The difference in this game will be the Rams’ defense. And besides, what are the chances McVay goes 0-3 against Pederson? Rams 30, Eagles 27

SUPER BOWL LV

Kansas City Chiefs vs Los Angeles Rams

Two seasons ago the Rams and Chiefs played in what has been called one of the greatest football games in NFL history. Los Angeles won it 54-51, in a game that put up pinball passing stats on both teams. Mahomes threw for 478 yards and three touchdowns (with three picks) and Jared Goff threw for 413 yards and four touchdowns.

It’s the game that showed how good both teams could be on offense. A rematch in the Super Bowl, especially since most pundits (not me, obviously) are down on the Rams this year, would be nothing less than a Godsend, especially after what has been a pretty rough year for everybody.

I think the Chiefs are a dynasty. I think, with Mahomes, they’ll hoist multiple Super Bowl trophies before he hangs up his cleats. But I also think the Rams will be their great, cross-conference rival, akin to the older Steelers vs Cowboys match ups in the 1970s. Both teams have been there before, the Rams blowing their shot at a title in a 13-3 loss to the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LIII. Last year, the Chiefs came back to not blow their shot, erasing a 20-10 San Francisco 49ers lead to win 31-20. Both these offenses will light it up.

That’s why the defense will make the difference. Aaron Donald and Jalen Ramsey will make the plays when they have to and Los Angeles lands the next punch in what could be a generational AFC vs NFC conflict. Rams 48, Chiefs 45

As of this writing, the Chiefs pay at +325 to win the AFC Championship and +650 to win the Super Bowl. The Rams are +3000 to take the NFC title and +6000 to win the Super Bowl.
