Serena Williams has had an incredible run. She is just shy of 39 years old, and she is still playing at an elite level. She has won 23 Grand Slam titles, the most of any player in the Open Era, and Williams has also won more US Open titles than any other woman in the Open Era with six titles at Flushing Meadows. However, she has lost her last two US Open Finals appearances, and her loss to Naomi Osaka in the 2018 US Open Finals could foreshadow what we see this year. That has led to Osaka being the co-favorite alongside Williams by the tennis betting odds entering the second Grand Slam of 2020.

2020 Women’s US Open Betting Odds

Naomi Osaka +500

Serena Williams +500

Karolina Pliskova +1000

Garbine Muguruza +1600

Sofia Kenin +1600

Aryna Sabalenka +1800

Johanna Konta +1800

Elise Mertens +2000

Jennifer Brady +2000

Madison Keys +2000

Petra Kvitova +2000

All Other Players are +2200 or More

We have never seen a player quite like Serena Williams in women’s tennis. Her power is legendary, and her serve has kept her competitive for over two decades. Williams has the chance to become the first tennis player ever to win a Grand Slam title in four decades, as she has won in the 1990s, 2000s, and 2010s. She has made the finals of the US Open ten times over her career, but the years have caught up with her, and she is nowhere near as nimble as she was even five years ago. Two-week tournaments are a grind for the GOAT this late in his career, but she is worth a decent play at 5-1 if you keep an eye on hedging later in the week.

Naomi Osaka won the 2018 US Open and the 2019 Australian Open, but she has failed to make it past the fourth round in any of her other 16 appearances in a Grand Slam event. Osaka overcame some early struggles in her first tournament back at the Cincinnati Masters, but she made the finals after beating Elise Mertens in straight sets. The weaker field will give her less competition early in the tournament, and she can take over in the second week with her youth and all-around game. That makes her a great bet by the US Open betting lines.

The No. 1 seed at this major will be Karolina Pliskova. However, there’s a good reason that Pliskova is behind Williams and Osaka in terms of the overall odds. Pliskova has not won a Grand Slam in her career, and she has not played great in 2020. Although she won the Brisbane International, she was bounced in the third round of the Australian Open and didn’t look great in Dubai or Doha either. We saw her lose in straight sets as the No. 1 seed at the Cincinnati Masters last weekend, so it’s hard to wager on her at 10-1.

There is a crowded field behind Pliskova according to the oddsmakers. Garbine Muguruza and Sofia Kenin met in the Australian Open Finals with Kenin overcoming a first-set loss to win her first major. Muguruza has made the finals of every other tournament save the US Open, and she won the 2016 French Open and 2017 Wimbledon. As for Kenin, her Australian Open victory was her breakthrough as she has not made it past the fourth round in any other major.

If you’re going to roll the dice with someone in the next tier of odds, Petra Kvitova might be the most alluring option. Kvitova has two major victories under her belt, and she made the finals of the 2019 Australian Open. She has been disappointing in her last two US Open appearances, but she made the quarters of the 2020 Australian Open and has proven she can play on hard court.

Follow our Twitter account for the latest sports news and wagering odds, and come to our Instagram for more useful betting info too.

The greatest player in the history of women’s tennis may hand off the baton at the 2020 US Open.
