Even with a full 50 percent of winners being signal-callers, it still doesn’t feel like much of a trend. If anything, it shows that the caliber of rookies coming out of the NCAA has improved significantly over the last decade and, also, the teams that rolled the dice on a first round QB did pretty well.

Outside of the quarterback position, we have four running backs (Eddie Lacy in 2013, Todd Gurley in 2015, Alvin Kamara in 2017 and Saquon Barkley in 2018). The lone exception was then New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. in 2014.

So what does this mean? We’ll take a good look as we peruse the odds for…

2020 OFFENSIVE ROOKIE OF THE YEAR

The common thread of all those quarterbacks who claimed rookie of the year honors is that they were all Day One starters. They were anointed as such before the team took a single regular season snap, even if they had to “win” the job in camp over a wily veteran.

That means you can go ahead and forget about Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa (+1200) or Los Angeles Chargers QB Justin Herbert (+2000) thanks to their coaches announcing this week that they would not make their opening week games interesting in even the slightest bit.

Almost a week ago Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn revealed that Tyrod Taylor would hit the field with Los Angeles’ starting unit on Week One match up with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Sunday, Dolphins head coach Brian Flores let it be known that ever-stalwart Ryan Fitzpatrick and his prospector beard would take snaps for his team as they put their neck on the executioner’s block in New England.

That means if you’re thinking quarterback, you’re looking at Taylor’s opponent in that Week One match up, Cincinnati Bengals No. 1 overall pick Joe Burrow (+300). Burrow is right behind Kansas City Chiefs running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire (+225) in the odds and I like his chances. Even if the Bengals finish with a losing record, and they most certainly will, a performance anywhere in the vicinity of what the kid did at LSU last year will have him not only take this award home, but land a Pro Bowl nod as well.

Outside of Burrow, Edwards-Helaire too makes a lot of sense. If he puts down a Kareem Hunt 2017 type season for Andy Reid and the Kansas City Chiefs, he’ll be tough to beat. In fact, the only reason Hunt didn’t take the official OROTY award in 2017 is because Kamara got it. Hunt did share the Pro Football Writers of America version.

Is there a dark horse that could really pay off here? I don’t see them. Jonathan Taylor with the Indianapolis Colts (+1000) will split time early with Marlon Mack. Cam Akers (+1200) of the Los Angeles Rams will have the same issue with Malcolm Brown. The only realistic way Ceedee Lamb (+1400) gets into the mix stat-wise is if Amari Cooper of Michael Gallup get hurt.

If you did want to roll the dice on a bigger payoff, D’Andre Swift (+2000), talent-wise, is probably the second best offensive skill player on the Detroit Lions roster. But the team wants to use Kerryon Johnson and just signed Adrian Peterson, so the stats probably won’t be there.

Burrow or Edwards-Helaire are really the only logical options this early in the season.

Follow our BetOnline Twitter account for the latest sports news and betting odds, and stay tuned on the Instagram feed for more good information too.

BY ADAM GREENE Since 2010, five quarterbacks have taken home the NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Year postseason award, including…

[129

post-13342","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-nfl
["GET
