Winged Foot Golf Club is notoriously treacherous, as an errant tee shot will put you in the course’s legendary deep rough, making it tough to salvage par. That will reward accuracy off the tee more than most tournaments, so big hitter Bryson DeChambeau is not among the top five favorites entering this weekend.

Instead, Dustin Johnson and Jon Rahm are the favorites per the golf betting odds. Johnson is the hottest golfer in the world after finishing T2 or better in his last four tournaments to win the 2020 FedEx Cup. Meanwhile, Rahm has won the Memorial and the BMW Championship in the last two months, and he is primed to win his first major.

Event Details

Event: US Open

Category: PGA Tour

Date: September 17-20, 2020

Location: Winged Foot Golf Club, Mamaroneck, New York

Past Five Winners

2019: Gary Woodland -13

2018: Brooks Koepka +1

2017: Brooks Koepka -16

2016: Dustin Johnson -4

2015: Jordan Spieth -5

All of golf’s biggest names will be at the US Open other than Brooks Koepka. The last back-to-back winner of this tournament had to withdraw last week due to injury, and he would have been one of the favorites given his reputation at majors. Gary Woodland outdueled Koepka at Pebble Beach last summer, but Woodland is considered a longshot this week as he is finished in the top 20 just twice in his last nine events.

The Course

There is no course in the United States with more difficult rough than Winged Foot. The tournament directors decided to keep the rough at 12 inches or more in length in some spots, and it is so thick that even the best golfers have lost balls during practice rounds this week. That has led to the US Open bringing out more marshals and using ball tracking technology in order to help players find their lie if they miss the fairway.

These greens are extremely difficult to read as well. Those greens led to the 1974 US Open here being dubbed the Massacre at Winged Foot with Hale Irwin winning at +7. Four of the five US Opens played at Winged Foot have had a winner finish over par, including the 2005 edition which saw Geoff Ogilvy win with a +5 after Phil Michelson and Colin Montgomerie both double bogeyed the final hole.

The 1984 US Open saw Fuzzy Zoeller and Greg Norman become the only two players to ever finish 72 holes at Winged Foot under par in this tournament. They both finished four-under after regulation, but Norman shot five-over in the 18-hole playoff on Monday to give Zoeller the win.

Value Play to Win the Event: Webb Simpson +2500

Simpson won the 2012 US Open at Olympic, and he is well-suited to succeed at Winged Foot. He is one of the most accurate hitters on the PGA Tour, and he led the tour in adjusted scoring and bogey avoidance last year. As one of the top putters, he won’t be as flummoxed by the undulating greens, and he will have a better time staying out of the treacherous rough. Simpson won the Waste Management Phoenix Open and the RBC Heritage earlier this year.

Top 5 Prop: Collin Morikawa +400

It’s not easy to win consecutive majors, but Morikawa has a chance. He showed remarkable poise for his age at the PGA Championship two months ago, and that performance won’t lead to him being frazzled at Winged Foot. He is excellent at putting the ball where he wants to on the course, so as long as his putter is solid, he is great value to finish in the top five.

Follow our Twitter account for the latest sports news and wagering odds, and come to our Instagram for more useful betting info too.

This year’s US Open will be held at one of the most difficult courses in the world.
