It’s all about the quarterbacks on the top teams in the nation, plus an outsider from a brand-name program who keeps carrying his team on his back. Four players seem to have a realistic shot at the award, and none are from Clemson, given that Trevor Lawrence hasn’t played in nearly a month due to COVID-19 issues of various kinds.

Justin Fields, Ohio State

The Buckeyes’ quarterback is in the mix for the Heisman Trophy, but he didn’t help his chances this past weekend against Indiana. Fields committed three turnovers and played one of the more inconsistent games of his tenure at Ohio State. Fields still has glossy statistics, but he has to look very sharp over the next month, and he can’t have another game akin to what he endured versus Indiana. Another game like that will knock him out of the running for the Heisman Trophy, though it’s very likely he will be a Heisman Finalist, even if his level of play doesn’t significantly improve.

D’Eriq King, Miami

The outsider in this race is King, who is the main reason Miami has just one loss this season. Miami has played some mediocre games this season – such as North Carolina State – and it had 13 players unavailable due to COVID-19 at Virginia Tech. King led a comeback from an 11-point deficit in that game. He has been magnificent for a flawed team which has needed a leader and playmaker to come to the rescue when the chips are down. King isn’t the favorite to win the award, but if Miami doesn’t lose another game this season, and if the other top-tier contenders all struggle, King could be the dark-horse surprise candidate who swoops in late and picks off the stiff-arm trophy. He shouldn’t be ruled out of the conversation just yet. He is more in the race than Trevor Lawrence is, for instance, since he has continued to play games and win. Lawrence has been sidelined for the past month.

Kyle Trask, Florida

This might be the favorite heading into the final weekend of November. Trask has had multiple games this season with at least five touchdown passes. He is soaring up the list of Florida quarterbacks in terms of single-season and career marks. He has been thriving in recent weeks despite lacking his favorite target, tight end Kyle Pitts, who returns this weekend against Kentucky and should boost Trask’s stats even more. Trask needs to not only guide Florida to the SEC Championship Game versus Alabama, but play extremely well against Alabama. If he does that, he has a very good chance of winning the award. He will really benefit if he can outplay the next guy on this list below:

Mac Jones, Alabama

The prospect of a Florida-Alabama showdown in the SEC Championship Game could realistically decide the Heisman Trophy if Justin Fields doesn’t markedly improve his level of play. Jones has been slinging the ball all around the yard this season, along with Trask, in a great SEC quarterback duel. If they both play at roughly the same level in a possible SEC title game clash, the team which wins the game might produce the Heisman winner. That could amount to the unofficial tiebreaker for a lot of Heisman voters.

The 2020 Heisman Trophy race is gaining more clarity as the month of November ends and we work toward the…

[133

post-14570","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-ncaaf
["GET
