Such is the case with the Detroit Lions, a team that if they haven’t made the Bad Beats cut in any given week, were always in the running.

In fact, it wouldn’t shock you at all to know that of all the teams featured in Bad Beats this season, only the Houston Texans have been in more articles than the Lions. Until today.

Yes, by virtue of Detroit QB Matthew Stafford picking up his 31st career come from behind victory, the Lions are now tied with the Texans for Bad Beats appearances with four games to go in the regular season.

But here’s what might really make this entry in the Bad Beats pantheon particularly special. It’s a repeat of a match up from Week One that also happened to be our first Bad Beat of the 2020-21 season; Chicago Bears 27, Detroit Lions 23.

With the pressure to match that epic money burning contest 12 weeks later, the Lions and Bears teamed up for a Bad Beat of the ages; Detroit Lions 34, Chicago Bears 30.

Such are the accomplishments for which tales are long told over candlelight and firepits throughout all time. These are the contests that the bards write songs about, plucking out their sorrowful tunes on lutes and dulcimers in the taprooms and ale houses of many a far off land.

We start our tragedy with the final line for the game; Bears -3, and how that particular spread will haunt bettors dreams for epochs to come. It will be scrawled on cavern walls, pressed into clay tablets and etched into the earth in megalithic structures that will confound archeologists with the science of their construction and purpose.

Do you think Stonehenge was built as a solar observatory to mark the solstices? Pshaw! It was to mark the defeat of Knap of Howar by Eilean Dumhnuill by a last-second scrotum kick. It was known as the Boot Heard Round Loch Olabhat and facilitated the changing of hands of many a Soay sheep and Hielan coo, thanks fer nuthin’. Aye, plenty o’ winter stocks were emptied out on that fateful day, I’ll tell ye!

And there you sat on of a Sundee, having plucked down your pounds sterling upon the Bears of Chicago to valiantly prevail o’er the Lions from Detroit.

But with two minutes to go in the game, you were nervous. Stafford had already driven the team down for a touchdown, pulling within your allowed three points. But the Bears have one of the best defenses in football. Even if Mitchell Trubisky could do next to nothing with the game on the line, and you were certain he wouldn’t, Stafford would still be given the ball back with probably barely a minute to go and the length of the field to cover.

And even then, Detroit is playing for the field goal to get to overtime. You’d still have your chance to cover a measly three points.

Trubisky would have none of it. With 1:46 left on the clock, the quarterback that will forever be known as the guy selected over both Patrick Mahomes and Deshaun Watson was sacked by Romeo Okwara and fumbled the ball right into John Penisini’s hands at the seven yard line. Yes. The seven.

Two plays later, Adrian Peterson spiked the ball in the end zone and Detroit led 34-30.

Yet, all was not lost. There was still 1:37 left in the game. The Bears could possibly cover if Trubisky drove the team down the field to score a touchdown.

Such a thought was ridiculous. You didn’t even bother to watch the end. You picked up your remote, hit the power button, and began selecting the large piece of volcanic rock for which you will forge your commemorative mystery stone circle for the ages.

Follow our BetOnline Twitter account for the latest sports news and betting odds, and stay tuned on the Instagram feed for more good information too.

BY ADAM GREENE Some teams are simply destined to be featured repeatedly in a Bad Beats column.
