The NFL\u2019s quarterbacks are going to be moving around in the coming months. NFL trades and free agency are going to produce a lot of changes in the composition of the league and its balance of power. It will be jarring to see familiar faces in new places, but the bigger question is which good teams will get an upgrade at quarterback and go from being a No. 6 playoff seed (or a middle-of-the-pack team) to a Super Bowl favorite or (at least) a top-level contender. The NFL is about to create a lot of upheaval.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The best quarterback on the market, by far, is Deshaun Watson. He wants a trade out of Houston, so the Texans really have no choice. They have to arrange a deal for him. Where Watson goes is one of the two big domino-effect dimensions of this quarterback reshuffle we are going to see in the NFL. If Watson goes to a team which has a lot of other pieces in place, that team becomes a Super Bowl contender, which will make other teams react with even more urgency in an attempt to keep pace. If Watson goes to a team (the Jets, for instance) which doesn\u2019t have all the other pieces in place, the responses from other NFL teams will be different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If Watson wants to go to a team which can carry him to a Super Bowl, the choices are obvious: The San Francisco 49ers, Indianapolis Colts and Los Angeles Rams are the three best teams Watson could land with if he wants to pursue a championship. The Niners have Kyle Shanahan and a defense with Nick Bosa. The Colts have an elite running game. The Rams have Aaron Donald and a strong defense. All three teams are led by talented play-callers, Kyle Shanahan, Frank Reich (Indianapolis) and Sean McVay (Los Angeles).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
2. Matthew Stafford<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The Deshaun Watson drama is the biggest quarterback question mark of all, and Matthew Stafford is the second big question mark. He could go to one of several different teams and instantly raise that team\u2019s profile by a considerable degree. The Denver Broncos, New England Patriots, Washington Football Team, Chicago Bears, and Carolina Panthers would all become a lot better if Stafford joined them. Of the teams on that list, the Patriots and Washington would probably stand to benefit the most. Stafford could also join the 49ers, Colts and Rams, the three teams which could most realistically make the Super Bowl if Stafford joined them. If Deshaun Watson goes to either the 49ers or the Rams, would Stafford want to join Watson in the NFC West? Probably not. The Colts would then become the option. If Watson goes to the Colts, then Stafford could seek the Niners or Rams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n 3. Gardner Minshew<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The Jacksonville Jaguars are going to draft Trevor Lawrence and play the No. 1 pick this season, which means Minshew should be headed out of Jacksonville. Watson and Stafford are the top targets, but Minshew \u2013 who had few resources in Jacksonville \u2013 could become a perfectly decent quarterback for a team which has a good roster and merely needs a competent quarterback. The New England Patriots make a lot of sense for him. He would be an upgrade from Cam Newton, whose arm strength has seemingly evaporated and won\u2019t come back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n 4. Tyrod Taylor<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The veteran lost his starting job to Justin Herbert with the Chargers. If the veteran can latch onto a team with a good defense, he can be a solid game manager who could create a 9-7 or 10-6 team. The Denver Broncos stand out as a possible and good spot for him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n 5. Ryan Fitzpatrick<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The presence of Tua Tagovailoa in Miami means Ryan Fitzpatrick\u2019s run with the Dolphins should be over. Depending on what the other quarterbacks do, Fitz could go to the Bears or Panthers and give that team a clear upgrade at quarterback compared to 2020.
