Those 19 wins ended up being the fewest in all of baseball. This team was atrocious last season and it doesn’t look like they will be any better this year. Clearly, they’re trying to build a foundation but where exactly are they in the process? Nobody is quite certain if they’ve bottomed out yet or if they could fall even further.

What Happened Last Year

Pittsburgh had a very bad year in 2020. The team finished in fifth place in the NL Central with a 19-41 record, evening out to a .317 winning percentage. This would also go down as the worst record in the MLB last season, landing them the first overall pick in the draft. Pittsburgh was also dead last in total runs scored with 219, while allowing their opponents to score a total of 298 on them. They struggled in the pitching department and weren’t really able to get anything going offensively. Their roster in 2020 just happened to be one of the worst in the league, including a small regression from Josh Bell. If you couldn’t tell, 2020 was a year to forget for the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Offseason Changes

The offseason wasn’t kind to Pittsburgh fans, as the team shipped away three of their best players including Josh Bell, Jameson Taillon and Joe Musgrove. The Pirates made it clear that they do not have intentions of competing for a playoff spot anytime soon and are hoping to get a jump start on their full rebuild. They got a number of interesting prospects out of those trades though, including Miguel Yajure, Eddy Yean and Wil Crowe. Outside of those huge trades the team didn’t make any splash signings, picking up small minor league deals with a few guys like Tony Wolters and Briand Goodwin just to name a few. Hopefully those prospects are able to pan out the way they are anticipating.

2021 Outlook

The Pittsburgh Pirates don’t have much to look forward to this upcoming season besides watching the development of some of their younger prospects. They do have Ke’Bryan Hayes to watch this year, who is expected to become a very talented player in this league and has been putting up excellent numbers so far. This team does have a good bit of talent overall even though they are likely to remain on the bottom of the division for the foreseeable future. Given the current state of this roster, don’t expect them to compete for a division championship as they will likely finish below all of their rivals like the St. Louis Cardinals and the Chicago Cubs. Their lack of spending in the offseason further proves their commitment to a full blown rebuild, making the case for them to pick up the worst record in the MLB once again and possibly obtaining another top selection in the next draft.

Pick: 5th In National League Central

The Pittsburgh Pirates are coming off a disastrous year where they finished 19-41.
