Now, to be fair, the Jets have done this before. Todd Bowles, Rex Ryan and Herm Edwards were all guys highly sought after at the time, but with ownership zeroing in on Adam Gase back in 2019 with the Miami Dolphins’ bootprint still visible on his ass, no one knew how this coaching search was going to pan out.

They got Robert Saleh, former defensive coordinator of the San Francisco 49ers. They did alright.

But the coach is just the first piece of a the team rebuild puzzle. You need a quarterback and NFL caliber players, something the Jets did not enjoy in Gase’s two seasons at the helm. New York opened its new regime by drafting BYU quarterback Zach Wilson. Was it the right call? We won’t know for a couple of years, but what the Jets do have now is hope.

And that’s certainly new.

NEW YORK JETS

Last season: 2-14, 4th Place, AFC East

2021 odds: over 6 wins -115, under 6 wins -115

2021 NFL Draft: Zach Wilson, QB, BYU – Round 1, Alijah Vera-Tucker, OL, USC – Round 1, Elijah Moore, WR, Ole Miss – Round 2, Michael Carter, RB, North Carolina – Round 4, Jamien Sherwood, Safety, Auburn – Round 5, Michael Carter II, Safety, Duke – Round 5, Jason Pinnock, CB, Pittsburgh – Round 5, Hamsah Nasirildeen, Safety, Florida State – Round 6, Brandin Echols, CB, Kentucky – Round 6, Jonathan Marshall, DT, Arkansas – Round 6

UDFAs: Isaiah Dunn, DB – Oregon State, Michael Dwumfour, DL – Rutgers, Camilo Eifler, LB – Illinois, Parker Ferguson, OL – Air Force, Grant Hermanns, OL – Purdue, Tristen Hoge, OL – BYU

Acquisitions: Lamarcus Joyner, Safety – Free Agent, Morgan Moses, RT – Free Agent, Corey Davis, WR – Free Agent, Tevin Coleman, RB – Free Agent, Tyler Kroft, TE – Free Agent, Keelan Cole, WR – Free Agent, Sheldon Rankins, DL – Free Agent, Jarrad Davis, LB – Free Agent, Ronald Blair, Edge – Free Agent, Justin Hardee, WR – Free Agent, Sharrod Neasman, Safety – Free Agent, Dan Feeney, LG – Free Agent, Carl Lawson, Edge – Free Agent, Matt Cole, WR – Free Agent, Austin Walter, RB – Free Agent, Del’Shawn Phillips, LB – Free Agent, Vinny Currey, Edge – Free Agent

Key Losses: Henry Anderson – DL, Sam Darnold – QB, Breshad Perriman – WR, Brian Poole – CB, Bradley McDougald – Safety, Jordan Jenkins – LB, Neville Hewitt – LB, Patrick Onwuasor – LB, Matthias Farley – Safety, Frank Gore – RB, Pat Elflein – LG, Bryce Hager – LB, Josh Doctson – WR, Trevon Coley – DL, Ross Travis – TE, Tarrell Basham – Edge, Chase McLaghlin – K, Frankie Luvi – LB, Harvey Langi – LB

PRESUMED STARTERS

QB: Zach Wilson

RB: Tevin Coleman

WR: Corey Davis

WR: Denzel Mims

WR: Jamison Crowder

TE: Chris Herndon

LT: Mekhi Becton

LG: Alijah Vera-Tucker

C: Connor McGovern

RG: Greg Van Roten

RT: Morgan Moses

LDE: Carl Lawson

LDT: Sheldon Rankins

RDT: Quinnen Williams

RDE: Vinny Curry

OLB: Blake Cashman

MLB: C.J.
