We often see a team dominate one season and make a deep playoff run, then due to a variety of factors, miss the postseason entirely the next year. There have been nine Super Bowl champions in the history of this league to miss the playoffs the next year, which makes this all the more likely to happen to some incredibly talented teams. Here we will be taking a look at four teams in the NFL who could possibly drop out of contention despite falling just short in 2020.

Chicago Bears

The Chicago Bears somehow found a way to sneak into the postseason last year with an 8-8 overall record. They were able to make it despite having terrible quarterback play with Nick Foles and Mitchell Trubisky all year. Chicago upgraded the position by signing Andy Dalton and drafting Justin Fields, who we may never get to see as he develops behind the scenes in his rookie season. Their defense is exceptional, and they have some talented wideouts but not having a consistent quarterback is bound to catch up to them.

Pittsburgh Steelers

Many believe that the Pittsburgh Steelers insane 11-0 start to last season was a complete fluke. They stumbled towards the end of the regular season and were smacked around by the Cleveland Browns in the Wild Card game. They return this year with a lot of uncertainty as Ben Roethlisberger is only getting older and they didn’t really find a way to improve their defense. The offensive line also lost a couple of key members from both retirement and cuts which could hurt their stellar rookie Najee Harris throughout the year. Pittsburgh may have a number of talented players on their roster but chemistry and off the field issues could end up plaguing them again.

Indianapolis Colts

This one may be shocking as some people claim that the Indianapolis Colts are Super Bowl contenders with a sturdy quarterback. However, that is just the issue here. They lost Philip Rivers to retirement and snagged Carson Wentz from the Philadelphia Eagles. Wentz has already gotten injured in training camp and was initially expected to miss the first couple weeks before hearing that he could be ready by Week 1 if all things go right. Wentz has a lot of potential with this Colts squad, but his injury history coupled with the increased talent of the AFC could end up leaving Indianapolis as the odd one out.

New Orleans Saints

It’s never easy to replace a future Hall of Fame player no matter the position. Yet the New Orleans Saints saw the legendary Drew Brees head into retirement after their Divisional Round loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. This means that either Taysom Hill or Jameis Winston will be starting at quarterback for them, a massive drop off from Brees. Winston has shown some potential, but it is yet to be known if he can rise up to that consistently. New Orleans also saw the rest of their division and conference get better throughout the offseason, which could push them just out of reach of the postseason.

It happens almost every single year in the NFL.
