Speaking of the trade deadline…

DESHAUN WATSON REMAINS A HOUSTON TEXAN

So now what? The Houston Texans haven’t been playing Deshaun Watson as their quarterback specifically to keep him healthy enough to trade before the deadline. As of Tuesday at 4 p.m. EST, that deadline passed and Watson remains on the roster.

This is all speculation on my part, but I feel what led to this turn of non events is the Texans wouldn’t move from their asking price, whatever that was (presumably three first round picks and maybe more). The teams that were (or could have been) involved just weren’t willing to turn in that kind of draft capital without knowing how Watson’s legal issues are going to turn out.

Watson is still facing 22 civil suits and 10 criminal complaints. And while all that more than likely will be settled and Watson will be clear to then face some kind of wrist slap from Roger Goodell and the NFL, it hasn’t happened yet. The Miami Dolphins, in particular, weren’t going to spend the picks and then end up with a QB behind bars. No one would.

It apparently didn’t help that reportedly the Texans thought Watson’s civil suits would be settled and decided they needed to up the price. Now, they’re stuck paying him not to play and it’ll likely stay that way the rest of the season.

Houston has to keep sitting Watson to keep him healthy and ready for the block in the offseason. Presumably, the legal side of the ordeal will be wrapped by then and they can begin negotiating once again with teams like the Carolina Panthers, Philadelphia Eagles, Denver Broncos and Miami Dolphins.

SO WHO WAS TRADED BEFORE THE DEADLINE?

The biggest splash was made by the team that usually wets down everyone sitting beside the pool, the Los Angeles Rams, when they sent their 2022 second and third round picks to the Denver Broncos in exchange for future Hall of Fame edge rusher Von Miller.

Not only did Rams general manager Les Snead get the deal done, they got the Broncos to pay nine million of Miller’s $9.7 million salary for the season. Meaning LA will put Miller alongside Aaron Donald, Sebastian Joseph Day, A’Shawn Robinson and Leonard Floyd for all of $700,000. This year Miller has 19 tackles, seven for a loss, nine QB hits and 4.5 sacks in barely seven games’ work.

Los Angeles now holds a third rounder, fifth rounder and two seventh rounders in April’s draft, though they should end up with a handful of sixth rounders once all the compensatory picks are doled out.

Last week the Rams traded inside linebacker Kenny Yong to the Broncos for a 2024 seventh round pick (but this was probably also part of the Von Miller trade in retrospect.)

As for the rest of the trades that happened over the month and down to the wire, we have…

Denver stayed active, trading cornerback Kary Vincent Jr. to the Philadelphia Eagles for a 2022 six rounder. They also sent a 2022 seventh round pick to the Minnesota Vikings for defensive end Stephen Weatherly and 2023 seventh rounder.

Kansas City sent guard Laurent Duvernay-Tardiff packing to the New York Jets in exchange for tight end Dan Brown. The Chiefs also added edge rusher Melvin Ingram from the Pittsburgh Steelers for a 2022 sixth rounder selection.

The Jets added an extra quarterback to their room with Zach Wilson hurt, trading a conditional sixth round selection to the Philadelphia Eagles for Joe Flacco. Flacco was with the Jets last season.

San Francisco got defensive end Charles Omenihu from the Houston Texans for a 2023 sixth rounder. A few days earlier, Houston traded running back Mark Ingram to his former team, the New Orleans Saints, for a late round draft pick.

The Arizona Cardinals opened the month adding tight end Zach Ertz from the Eagles for cornerback Tay Gowan and a 2022 fifth rounder. Ertz has already paid dividends, catching a touchdown and hauling in seven receptions for 110 yards over his first two games with the team.

Stephon Gilmore came off injured reserve for the New England Patriots and was promptly dealt to the Carolina Panthers on Oct. 6 for a 2023 sixth rounder.

And, lastly, the Miami Dolphins opened the trade-a-polooza back on Oct. 5 when they shipped wide receiver Jakeem Grant to the Chicago Bears in exchange for a 2023 sixth round draft pick. In four games with the Bears, Grant has returend eight punts and two kicks for a total of 105 yards.

THE JETS KEEP PROVING ‘ANY GIVEN SUNDAY’ IS A REAL THING

The New York Jets are one of the worst teams in the NFL. On Sunday, they knocked off the AFC team that would have been the No. 1 seed if the playoffs started the day before 34-31, the Cincinnati Bengals.

They did it with a QB in Mike White making his first NFL start a week after they suffered a 54-13 defeat at the hands of the New England Patriots, the worst blowout in the NFL this year.

But that wasn’t New York’s first victory of the season. No, their first win came against the Tennessee Titans, 27-24, in overtime on Oct. 3. It was a game were Ryan Tannehill was just two yards short of throwing for 300 and Derrick Henry rushed for 157 and a touchdown. The Jets still won.

The irony of all this is the Titans are now set up as the No. 1 seed in the AFC thanks to New York’s insane upset over the Bengals.

And Tennessee spent the month after that crazy loss going 4-0 with monster wins over the Buffalo Bills, Kansas City Chiefs and Indianapolis Colts.

As Aaron Rodgers said, how can you not be romantic about football, man?

You sure as hell can’t make sense of it sometimes.

The NFL season is rolling along and the Week 9 Schedule is up and taking bets at BetOnline.AG.

Follow our BetOnline Twitter account for the latest sports news and betting odds, and stay tuned on the Instagram feed for more good information too

BY ADAM GREENE It was an eventful week, with upsets all over the place and the trade deadline looming over…

[129

post-19728","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-nfl
["GET
