Usually the wacky upsets happen early as teams feel each other out and the good teams rise to the forefront. One or two of those are always a surprise.

What I think no one was expecting was those “good teams” that rose, to all dive face first into a steaming pile of horse manure 10 weeks into the season, yet here we are. Every “good” team has a horrible loss if not multiple. But, you know what, that still doesn’t make it a Bad Beat.

Seven underdogs won outright in Week 10 and most of the games weren’t close. That’s not what creates a Bad Beat. What you need is a certain condition being met, something that looks like a guaranteed win late only to have it snatched from your greedy fingers in the final seconds.

As such, only one game qualifies not only as a Bad Beat in action, but because betting on this game was the only reason you paid attention to it at all. I’m talking, of course, about Indianapolis Colts 23, Jacksonville Jaguars 17.

The Jaguars came into the game with two wins in their pocket. Exactly 100 percent more victories than they amassed last season and plenty for their needs this year — acquiring high draft picks and finding an excuse to toss head coach Urban Meyer out the window.

Indianapolis had just won a game over a bad New York Jets squad to keep their barely there playoff hopes rolling forward. These two teams had a combined record of 6-11 entering the day. Scott Hanson on NFL Red Zone was already trying to work up the appropriate apologies any time he had to cut to this one when every other contest was at commercial.

The line was large, Colts -10.5 but Jacksonville was on the road. Indy’s defensive front is tough to run against and Jacksonville wasn’t healthy in the backfield. This should have been an Indianapolis domination with a quick ending. And with the Colts leading 17-6 after the first quarter, it looked exactly like that’s what was going to happen.

So you were content that you had plunked down your hard earned cash in hopes for a solid payout. You eyed the weird vacation display at Costco when you were loading up on two months of toilet paper and fruit roll ups. While you knew you could guy bulk at the megachain, preparing for any apocalypse coming, especially if you had to spend some serious time in the bathroom, it never occurred to you that you could purchase a vacation plan there as well. Yet, there it was.

Your eyes settled on Costa Rica, so when you got home you pulled up the website and, sure enough, there it was. Five nights at a beachfront resort, breakfast for two and a $75 spa credit for $1,375.

You could already feel the sand between your toes. The warm sun on your face. While everyone else in the USA was knee deep in snow, mud, rain and whatever the next COVID wave turns into, you’d be Ted Cruz-ing it out of the country sipping mixed drinks out of coconuts and getting fanned by a palm frond.

You had all the points you needed after the first quarter and if nothing else happened, you would have been teeing off with your unlimited use of the on-site driving range, sending golf balls into the tropical air in between bites of shrimp cocktail.

The teams traded field goals in the second quarter and at halftime the Colts led 20-9, exactly what you needed. Even better, absolutely nothing at all happened in the third quarter. Goose eggs for both teams and an 11 point difference that was going to have you picking out a flowered shirt and updating your passport.

But as the fourth quarter began, disaster struck. Trevor Lawrence, the 2021 No. 1 overall pick, began to play like it and put together a 10-play touchdown drive capped by a 2-point conversion that, frankly, seemed personally directed at you.

You looked down at your hand and the coconut drink began fading away like Marty McFly’s brother and sister inside the photo in Back to the Future Part 1.

But the Colts still led by three and, more importantly, there was more than 10 minutes left in the game. A couple of scoring drives is all you needed to get that point differential back to where you needed it and start Googling if you could rent a car with an American Driver’s license down there.

The Colts went three and out on their next possession, but kicked a field goal that did absolutely nothing for you the very next time they had the ball.

Your Costa Rican escape plan, like so many mobsters in decades past before you, was slipping away. But it would be the Jaguars this time that would hive you hope. Lawrence fumbled on a sack and for a moment you could envision a Colts player scooping it up and taking it to the house. Maybe they would go for two? You’re no analytics guy, but maybe somewhere, someone would talk Frank Reich into doing it in a way that make sense.

Instead, the Colts recovered. The ball was down and they took three knees and left the field victorious.

But not you. You would not even get to leave your couch. Your coconut mixed drink replaced by a couple of Bud Light Seltzers you bought by accident in the back of your refrigerator. There would be no sand. No car rental. No sun. Just mud, sludge, snow and failure.

At least, across the NFL, you were not alone.

Follow Adam Greene on Twitter @TheFirstMan

The NFL season is rolling along and the Week 11 Schedule is up and taking bets at BetOnline.AG.

Follow our BetOnline Twitter account for the latest sports news and betting odds, and stay tuned on the Instagram feed for more good information too

BY ADAM GREENE If you can make sense of this NFL season 10 weeks in, I wish you’d let me…

[129

post-19939","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-nfl
["GET
