Other times, it can be a slow burn, literally, as you begin to see your money smolder and, try as you might, there’s nothing you can do to stop it from catching fire.

No one taught us how to Stop, Drop and Roll away a Bad Beat.

While there were plenty of upsets and lackluster performances this week, only one counts as a Bad Beat. Sure, all the road teams won on Thanksgiving, with the Las Vegas Raiders showing that Dallas Cowboys -9 was a horrible bet from the opening quarter.

Most of the games were not particularly close and those that were had tight spreads to begin with. As such, only one game deserves recognition for the absolute incineration of our hopes, dreams and bankrolls this week. I am talking, of course, about Tampa Bay Buccaneers 38, Indianapolis Colts 31.

This one, I took personally. Not only because I picked the Colts to win the upset, but because I actually wagered on it myself. I felt it in my heart. This one spoke to me, with Indy’s defensive front, their wide receiver corps and, most importantly, a blazing hot Jonathan Taylor. There was no question this one had some real upset potential and it was at Indianapolis. The Buccaneers haven’t covered a spread on the road this season.

You know the deal when I write these. I usually create some bettor straw man, looking to celebrate his winnings on something overly expensive and frivolous. I create a story in which they have all but spent their victorious wad ahead of time, only to have it snatched away at the last minute like a dog chasing a ball that its owner has pretended to throw.

This time, that straw man is me. And I have suffered for it.

Because unlike that pretend idiot I make fun of every week, I really did go ahead and spend the money because I had to. It’s Christmas time and that’s what you do. And while I didn’t risk a lot, I definitely could have used the payoff (since I play a lot of parlays as you can probably guess) to reimburse myself for all the Christmas cheer I will distribute in and around December 25 thanks to some pretty solid online Black Friday deals. If there was ever a time to sit at home and do your shopping, it’s now.

And while I’m fully vaxxed, boosted and feeling super safe, I don’t like that we’re naming Covid-19 variants after Transformers now. Omicron? Are you serious? It has “ominous” right in its name.

Plus, you know, we needed stuff for the house. My daughter wanted us to get a Roomba so she could take pictures and videos of the cats sitting on it. Holliday cheer is upon us!

So I plunked my bet on Colts +3 (paired with some others) and expected a nice little windfall to get back even after my weekend couch spending spree. And as the Colts took a 24-14 lead into halftime, I was feeling more than OK about it.

You see, the Indianapolis have the best running back in the league right now in Jonathan Taylor. I say “right now” because Derrick Henry is on injured reserve and Christian McCaffrey (now also on injured reserve), rarely could even finish a game. Nick Chubb has been in and out most of the season. Taylor, a week before, scored five touchdowns in a game. He’s the first back to cross 1,000 yards this season and coming into Sunday’s game, had already scored 13 rushing touchdowns.

Up 10 points on the Super Bowl champions at home, I’d suspect you’d give them a healthy dose Taylor in the second half, letting him run it down their throats, eat clock, keep the ball away from Tom Brady and just, you know, win.

Of course, I’m not an NFL head coach or playcaller. Frank Reich had other ideas apparently and Taylor, in spite of averaging 5.2 yards per carry in the game, got only 20 touches in the entire four quarters and four of those were receptions. That’s right, 16 rushes for the league’s best guy with a double digit lead.

My Christmas purchases were already en route. The cats were already preparing their Roomba saddle. I did not have a hypothetical scenario where my money was gone. It was already out the door. I was just trying to get it back.

But I watched as Carson Wentz gave up a sack fumble to set up a Bucs quick scoring drive to pull within three to open the half. It was on a first and 10 play, in the Tampa Bay red zone. Again, you have Taylor. Who, like I said, even if you average in his reception touches, is good for 4.9 yards every time he puts his mitts on the ball. But you call a pass play there with a drop back long enough to give up a sack fumble?

In Omicron’s name, why?

On the Colts’ next drive, they again moved into Tampa’s territory and on a second and three, after a successful Wentz pass, instead of just handing the ball to Taylor and letting him grind out those three yards, Wentz takes the snap and immediately tosses it to Tampa defender Antoine Winfield Jr.

Seven plays later Tampa Bay had a touchdown and the lead.

It wasn’t even the fourth quarter.

The Colts would eventually tie the game and you won’t believe how they did it. It was a 10 play drive, and I hope you are sitting down, with eight Taylor runs including the four yard touchdown that capped it. Yes. I know. I’m as shocked as you are.

But, as you know if you regularly read my stuff, Tom Brady hates me personally and the feeling is mutual. So Tampa Bay scored again and my parlay wilted on the vine before the 4:30 games even kicked off.

Follow Adam Greene on Twitter @TheFirstMan

The NFL season is rolling along and the Week 12 Schedule is up and taking bets at BetOnline.AG.

Connect with us our socials on Twitter and Instagram for the latest sports news, viral moments, betting odds and the occasional memes.

BY ADAM GREENE Sometimes a Bad Beat can come out of nowhere, like a shark attack made of lightning bolts…

[129

post-20173","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-nfl
["GET
