They both had uneven regular seasons and will want to conclude their 2021 journeys on a high note.

Memphis Tigers vs. Hawaii Rainbow Warriors
Date: Friday, December 24th, 8:00 PM ET

Location: Clarence Ching Athletics Complex, Honolulu, HI

CFB Odds: Memphis -7.5

Memphis Tigers

Seth Henigan is where it all starts for the Memphis Tigers. The gunslinger has 3,322 passing yards for the season on 268 completions with 26 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He also added another 147 yards rushing on the ground. If Henigan puts out a performance similar to the one he had against Arkansas State, when he threw for 417 yards and five touchdowns, he’s going to be awfully hard for Hawaii to stop. The Rainbow Warriors are only No. 127 in the country in passing yards allowed, so the Tigers aren’t facing a team known for shutting down the pass. If Brandon Thomas is back after sitting out against Houston and Tulane, Memphis could get positive results by using the running back to set up the pass. The Tigers will also have positive momentum coming into this game after defeating Tulane to end the year and qualify for a bowl. They had lost three of four games prior to Tulane and were in danger of missing a bowl entirely. One other slight advantage the Tigers have is the controversy surrounding Hawaii football coach Todd Graham, which will be explained in greater detail.

Hawaii Rainbow Warriors

It’s difficult to know what Hawaii football is going to look like next year. Much has been said about Todd Graham’s tenure in Hawaii and how his manner of coaching and dealing with players has led to a startling number of players either entering the transfer portal or quitting football because they no longer love it. Nine players have joined the transfer portal for Hawaii, and they refuse to return to the team as long as Todd Graham is with the program. Why is this important? If nine players are bouncing from the program over the way Graham treats them, one wonders how many other players are merely sticking with it because their parents can’t afford to keep them in school if they aren’t on scholarship, or because players choose to live with an imperfect situation rather than speak out and create more publicity. Just how motivated is this Hawaii team to play in a game with all of these distractions swirling around? Remaining Hawaii players face a challenge.

Outlook

We have to wonder if the Rainbow Warriors are going to voice their dissatisfaction with their effort in this game. That point aside, Memphis faces fewer questions and doubts in this contest, and that is likely to manifest in the effort the Tigers put forth. Memphis should be able to dictate this game and ultimately gain an advantage. Hawaii has to prove it can hang with Memphis for 60 minutes.

Tigers vs. Rainbow Warriors Prediction:

Tigers 38, Rainbow Warriors 24

The Memphis Tigers and Hawaii Rainbow Warriors have unfinished business on Christmas Eve.
