It is the second of two College Football Playoff semifinal games at the Orange Bowl down in Miami. Third-seeded Georgia faces second-seeded Michigan in a very sexy and interesting clash. Georgia goes for its first national championship since 1980, with coach Kirby Smart potentially one win away from a rematch with Alabama if the Tide win their semifinal against Cincinnati. Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh finally beat Ohio State and won the Big Ten championship. This is a moment he and UM fans have long waited for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
These schools are so soaked in tradition and stature, and yet they have met only twice in their histories. The last meeting between the schools was in 1965, won by Georgia. Michigan won the first meeting in 1957. This is easily the most important game the two schools have ever played.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Bulldogs were blown away by Alabama, 41-24, in the SEC Championship Game. The outcome mirrored a 2020 loss to Alabama, also by the same 41-24 score. Alabama has a passing game and a level of offensive speed Georgia\u2019s defense was not prepared for. Because Alabama was able to gain and build a lead, Georgia was not able to rely on its running game or use a ball-control offense. The Bulldogs had to throw on a regular basis, and that\u2019s not their style. Georgia was clearly out of its element against Alabama, suggesting that if the two teams have a rematch in over a week, the Dawgs will be underdogs this time. They were nearly a touchdown favorite against Alabama in the SEC Championship Game four weeks ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The relief for Georgia is that Michigan is not as fast or as explosive as Alabama. Michigan plays a more conventional style of offense which Georgia\u2019s defense should be able to contain. Yet, if UGA gets behind by 10 points, there\u2019s no question this team is in trouble, because it is not built to come from behind or win high-scoring games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Wolverines pounded archrival Ohio State, 42-27, to finally beat the Buckeyes for the first time in a decade. Jim Harbaugh won his first game over Ohio State as Michigan\u2019s head coach. He had beaten Ohio State as Michigan\u2019s quarterback in the mid-1980s. Harbaugh was finally able to get his team to beak through against the hated Buckeyes, which should give Michigan a lot of confidence and belief entering this contest. Michigan was vastly physically superior at the line of scrimmage, pushing Ohio State off the ball and undeniably setting the right tone for this game. Michigan hopes to replicate that effort against Georgia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
With Michigan using a more traditional offensive style compared to Alabama, the Wolverines should be able to be contained by Georgia\u2019s defense.
