For the first time ever, the Utah Utes are in the Rose Bowl. Utah has had an incredible journey over the last decade, entering the Pac 12 and winning it despite being considered a potential doormat upon entry into the conference. Kyle Whittingham has done an incredible job with this program, and he could pull off the biggest win during his tenure with the Utes if they upset<\/a> the Ohio State Buckeyes on New Year\u2019s Day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 2022 Rose Bowl will take place on Saturday, January 1, 2022, at 5 p.m. ET on ESPN from the historic Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was an interesting season for the Ohio State Buckeyes. Ohio State\u2019s defense was not good for the first two weeks, resulting in a closer than expected win over Minnesota and a 35-28 loss to Oregon. The Buckeyes righted the ship in Big Ten play though and hammered Purdue and Michigan State in consecutive weeks. They were favorites on the road<\/a> against Michigan, but the Wolverines were able to dominate the line of scrimmage to win the Big Ten East and send Ohio State to Pasadena.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Utah went 1-2 in non-conference play. The Utes looked like they might suffer a down year, but they showed they were the best team in the Pac 12 South with blowout wins over Arizona State and UCLA. They decimated Oregon twice in three weeks to win their first Pac 12 title, beating the Ducks by a combined score of 76-17.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Ohio State Has the Ball<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

C.J. Stroud struggled a little at the start of the season, but he ended the year as a Heisman Trophy finalist. Stroud had a sensational freshman year, completing 70.9% of his passes for 3,862 yards (9.8 YPA) with 38 touchdowns and five interceptions. He isn\u2019t much of a runner, but he hasn\u2019t needed to use his legs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

TreVeyon Henderson has been incredible as a true freshman. He didn\u2019t start the season as the starting running back, but he ran for 1,165 yards (7.0 YPC) and 15 touchdowns. Unfortunately, standout receivers Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson decided to opt out to focus on the NFL Draft, but Jaxon Smith-Njigba is still on the roster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Utah is ranked 15th<\/sup> in Defensive SP+. The Utes have an excellent secondary, and the front seven has improved throughout the year. Linebacker Devin Lloyd has been one of the best defenders in the country, and he has eschewed the trend to opt out of bowl season in order to focus on the NFL Draft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Utah Has the Ball<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cam Rising was superb after taking over for Charlie Brewer. Rising completed 62.8% of his passes for 2,279 yards with 18 touchdowns and five interceptions. He was a superb runner too, averaging 6.5 YPC for the Utes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Utah had a dominant run game with Tavion Thomas running for 1,041 yards and 20 touchdowns, while T.J. Pledger ran for 6.9 YPC. The Utes have two great tight ends in Dalton Kincaid and Brant Kuithe, but Brittain Covey opted to enter the NFL Draft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This could be an issue for Ohio State\u2019s defense. The Buckeyes have had a hard time stopping power run teams this season, and their two losses were against Oregon and Michigan. They have been much better against the pass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prediction<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The over is the best bet<\/a> in this game. Utah will be able to run the ball successfully on Ohio State, and Stroud will have a lot of success through the air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
