A No. 16 seed finally beat a No. 1 seed in the 2018 NCAA Tournament when UMBC knocked off Virginia to make history. However, despite that setback, No. 1 seeds are unsurprisingly the best bets to make the Final Four. Since the tournament expended to 64 teams in 1985, a No. 1 seed has made it to the Final Four in 34 of the 36 editions of March Madness. In that stretch, a total of 59 of the 144 Final Four teams have been No. 1 seeds. If history holds, we should have one (and probably) two No. 1 seeds in the Final Four, so let’s break down the favorites to back this year.

No. 1 Seeds in the 2022 NCAA Tournament

Gonzaga (West Regional)

The Gonzaga Bulldogs have at least made it to the second weekend in each of the last six NCAA Tournaments. They have been eliminated in the Sweet Sixteen twice, the Elite Eight twice, and lost in the title game twice in this stretch.

The Bulldogs have what it takes to make it back to the Final Four. Drew Timme and Chet Holmgren are two of the best players in the country, and Holmgren is projected to be one of the first three picks in the 2022 NBA Draft. Gonzaga has a pretty good draw too as Duke is a weak No. 2 seed, but Memphis has a lot of talent and came together over the last month. Still, Mark Few and the Bulldogs have a good chance of being in New Orleans in three weeks.

Baylor (East Regional)

It’s going to be tough for Baylor to win its region. The Bears have been dealing with injuries to Jonathan Tchamwa Tchatchoua and L.J. Cryer, and they are in a very difficult bracket. They have the best No. 2 seed in Kentucky and probable Wooden Award winner Oscar Tshiebwe. A potential matchup with North Carolina in the Round of 32 could prove very challenging too, so the defending national champions are the most likely top seed to fall first.

Arizona (South Regional)

Arizona has had a great first season under Tommy Lloyd. Freshman Bennedict Mathurin is a guard that can do it all, and big men Christian Koloko and Azuolas Tubelis are one of the best frontcourt tandems in the country.

However, the Wildcats have a tough path to the Final Four. Houston and Illinois can both potentially bust brackets in the Sweet Sixteen, and the bottom half of the South Region is loaded with great teams. That makes Arizona a stay away.

Kansas (Midwest Regional)

The most likely top seed to get through its bracket is Kansas. The Jayhawks might be the weakest No. 1 seed according to Ken Pomeroy, but they are in the most manageable bracket in the tournament by a mile. The other top three seeds (Auburn, Wisconsin, and Providence) are all fools’ gold to one degree or another, and Kansas has real playmakers in Ochai Agbaji and David McCormack.

Follow our Twitter account for the latest sports news and wagering odds, and come to our Instagram for more useful betting info too.

There are no longer any guarantees in the NCAA Tournament.
