When these next three weeks are done and a champion is crowned in early April in New Orleans, who will be honored as the Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA Tournament? Let’s look at some selections which might offer you a good chance and a good return on your investment.

Drew Timme, Gonzaga: +950

The freshman on Gonzaga, Chet Holmgren, has received much more publicity this season because of his upside and some of the highlight-reel plays he makes, but Timme is the veteran on this team. His footwork in the low post is excellent. He is a seasoned, polished player. Crucially, he is much more physically developed than Holmgren. Timme will not get physically overpowered as much as Holmgren will. He will be much better equipped to handle vigorous defense from a powerful, muscular defender in the paint. This is why he offers a better chance of winning MOP than Holmgren does, if you are going to look for players on Gonzaga in particular. Andrew Nembhard is an interesting dark-horse choice, but Timme is the best choice.

Oscar Tshiebwe, Kentucky: +1600

This might be the best choice. Tshiebwe is the favorite for national player of the year to begin with. Kentucky has a great chance to make the Final Four. If the Wildcats do extremely well in this tournament, Tshiebwe will certainly be the main reason why. Tshiebwe has delivered a 20-20 game (20 or more points, 20 or more rebounds) this season, and makes an 18-point, 15-rebound game look ordinary. He could easily carry the Wildcats all the way and become MOP.

Ochai Agbaji, Kansas: +2000

The price on Agbaji is much lower than with Timme because Kansas’s chances of winning the NCAA Tournament are correctly much lower than Gonzaga’s. Kansas is not as good a team as Gonzaga. The Jayhawks are a No. 1 seed, but people will tell you that this is not the Jayhawks’ most talented team in recent years. Other Kansas teams have entered March Madness with a much higher ceiling. KU is not the best bet to win the title, so Agbaji is not the very best bet to win MOP. However, having said all that, Kansas did not get a terrible draw in the Midwest Region. The Jayhawks do have a pretty decent chance of making the Elite Eight, and if a team can make the Elite Eight, it can certainly make the Final Four and get close to winning a national championship. Agbaji is by far the best crunch-time scorer on the Jayhawks. He has been tremendous for this team all season long. Agbaji brings value at this price.

Jabari Smith, Auburn: +2500

The Auburn forward is projected by many to be the No. 1 pick in the 2022 NBA Draft. If he suffers from anything, it is that the Auburn guards don’t get him the ball enough. This presents a very simple possibility: Maybe Auburn’s guards will get him the ball more in the NCAA Tournament. If so, Smith could bust out with a huge three weeks and lead Auburn to the national championship, in which case he would definitely win MOP. This is a very intriguing proposition here, and it’s hardly out of the question.

The magic of March Madness is about to unfold in all its color and emotional upheaval.
