At the bottom, the bad teams are so awful that they’ve built permanent rooms in the basement like your stoner uncle that still lives with your gramma.

Two teams have already secured winning records for 2023-24 and three franchises have already posted losing records in this campaign as they angle for the top pick in April 2024’s NFL Draft.

Let’s see how they all stack up.

1. PHILADELPHIA EAGLES (10-1)

The Eagles have the best, most talented overall roster in the league and have lost a total of five games, counting Super Bowl LVII, since the Wild Card Round of the 2021-22 playoffs. They’re playing at home and yet, somehow, they are currently three-point dogs to the visiting San Francisco 49ers. After Philly has won back-to-back games against the Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills? Are you kidding me? This idea that the Niners would have somehow rolled into Philly and won the NFC title with a healthy Brock Purdy last season was laughable at the time and more wacky now. The Eagles will show exactly why Sunday. Last week: No. 1

2. KANSAS CITY CHIEFS (8-3)

The Chiefs have lost two of their last four, one to the Denver Broncos, who look more like a playoff team every day, and the other to the Philadelphia Eagles. The wins? Over the Las Vegas Raiders (which isn’t very impressive) and the Miami Dolphins (significantly more so until you realize that the Dolphins haven’t beaten a team with a winning record this year). What does this mean? That the Chiefs are probably still the best team in the AFC, but likely won’t be hoisting a Vince Lombardi again this year. Incidentally, the Chiefs are currently the two seed in the AFC, with the Baltimore Ravens at one. The last time KC entered the playoffs as the two, the Tennessee Titans lost their opening round playoff game, handing homefield back to Kansas City. Baltimore is unlikely to lose in the Divisional Round so there’s a good chance that Patrick Mahomes will have to play the first road playoff game of his entire NFL career this postseason. Last week: No. 2

3. MIAMI DOLPHINS (8-3)

As mentioned above, the Dolphins have not defeated a single team with a winning record this year. That’s the bad news. The good news is, they only face two teams with a winning record (as of this writing) over the last six games of their schedule. The path to the AFC East title is wide open. Last week: No. 4

4. JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS (8-3)

Unlike the Dolphins, the Jags have stacked up multiple victories over winning squads but have fallen short against the elite of the league, specifically the Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers. The only real test they have left on their schedule is the Baltimore Ravens in Week 15. Last week: No. 5

5. BALTIMORE RAVENS (9-3)

Thanks to a quirk of the NFL’s bye scheduling, the Ravens are the only team to join the Eagles so far this season officially securing a winning record. Baltimore seems to be the serious Super Bowl contender no one is talking about, which is good for them and bad for the teams they’ll steamroll in the playoffs. Last week: No. 6

6. DALLAS COWBOYS (8-3)

Well, as of Thursday night, the Cowboys should be able to claim their first victory over a team with a winning record. And, yes, I realize I’m bringing that up a lot, but it’s not my fault. It’s just what’ happening in the league this year. The bright side is, they should destroy the Seahawks. The worrisome part, for Dallas, is if they don’t. If this game is even competitive in the fourth quarter it’ll say more bad things about the Cowboys than good things about Seattle. Last week: No. 7

7. SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS (8-3)

Since the final whistle of their beat down of the Seattle Seahawks on Thanksgiving the 49ers have turned into the 40-whiners, lamenting on how losing then rookie quarterback Brock Purdy in the NFC Championship somehow cost them a game that they were going to lose regardless. The wailing and gnashing of teeth has affected the books, who have decided that, as of this writing, San Francisco is a 3-point road favorite in Philadelphia. Are you serious? To quote former fashion mogul and failed Malaysian Prime Minister assassin Mugato, “Doesn’t anyone notice this? I feel like I’m taking crazy pills!” Last week: No. 9

8. DETROIT LIONS (8-3)

There’s an old cliché, “put up or shut up,” and the Lions had a chance, once again, to put up on a national stage hosting the Green Bay Packers on Thanksgiving and decided to shut up instead. Detroit has one quality win this season — in Week 1 over the Kansas City Chiefs and they’ve not beaten a team with a winning record since. In fact, they took a bad loss to the Seattle Seahawks, a team that’s the real measuring stick for contenders. If you lose to Seattle, you aren’t one. On Thanksgiving, against a Packers team making a playoff push, the Lions once again crapped the bed. Over the last couple of decades the Lions have managed to make the playoffs a couple of times and, in each appearance, have lost in the opening round. There’s no reason to think the Dan Campbell version will be any different. Last week: No. 3

9. PITTSBURGH STEELERS (7-4)

In their first game without the millstone wrapped around an Albatross that was Matt Canada at offensive coordinator, not only did the Steelers win, they gained 421 yards of offense for the first time in 59 games. They’re still going to lose in the Wild Card Round, but there’s real hope for the future right now in Pittsburgh. Last week: No. 13

10. CLEVELAND BROWNS (7-4)

With their season on the ropes and traveling to SoFi Stadium to play a resurgent Los Angeles Rams team, the Browns look to Joe Flacco as a possible starter if rookie Dorian Thompson-Robinson can’t go. Also, Myles Garrett and Amari Cooper are both banged up. It looks bleak, but Cleveland fans are used to that. Last week: No. 8

11. HOUSTON TEXANS (6-5)

A tight loss to the Jags last week knocked the Texans out of the playoff bracket and, in a highly competitive AFC, they’ll struggle to get back in. This year. Houston is building something great and should be expected to compete for something real next year. It’s too bad they’ll likely lose offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik to a team looking for a new head coach. Last week: No. 10

12. INDIANAPOLIS COLTS (6-5)

Where the Texans fell, the Colts rose, pretending for a whole week they have a legitimate shot at a Wild Card spot. Enjoy these seven days, you scamps. Last week: No. 15

13. DENVER BRONCOS (6-5)

I’m not sure any team in NFL history has experienced the quick turnaround to match as these Broncos. They opened the year 0-4 and gave up 70 points to the Miami Dolphins in the process. The Sean Payton as Kevin James memes inundated our Twitter feeds. Since then, they’ve gone 6-1, Russell Wilson has actually looked like Russell Wilson and Denver is cruising to the playoffs. Any given Sunday, indeed. Last week: No. 17

14. GREEN BAY PACKERS (5-6)

Right as they’ve gotten back into the playoff hunt and Jordan Love looks like he could be the answer at quarterback, the Kansas City Chiefs show up on the schedule to screw it all up. Last week: No. 18

15. LOS ANGELES RAMS (5-6)

If the Rams played the Arizona Cardinals and Seattle Seahawks every week, they’d win 100 straight games. Since Sean McVay took over in 2017, they’ve lost a total of seven games to both those NFC West squads and three of those came last season when the Rams were starting Whole Foods bag boys with most of their key players out for the year. They now control their own destiny in the NFC Wild Card race and all they need to do is finish 4-2 and they’re in. Last week: No. 19

16. BUFFALO BILLS (6-6)

The Eagles game was a loss for the Bills the second it was placed on the schedule, so that’s not Buffalo’s current problem. The issue is all the stupid losses they had before they finally hit the trap door button under former offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey’s chair. Last week: No. 11

17. MINNESOTA VIKINGS (6-6)

Minnesota currently holds the seventh seed in the NFC after opening the year 0-4. It’s quite a feat to get there for the Vikings. It’s almost a shame they might not win another game this season. Enjoy your bye, Skol. Last week: No. 12

18. ATLANTA FALCONS (5-6)

Last year an 8-9 team led by Tom Brady won the NFC South only to be obliterated in the opening round of the playoffs. If head coach Arthur Smith is very lucky he can repeat that run in Atlanta without a future first ballot Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback on his roster and keep his job. Though he should still lose the mustache. Last week: No. 27

19. NEW ORLEANS SAINTS (5-6)

Ah, the NFC South. Three of the teams, the Falcons, Saints and Tampa Bay Buccaneers are not only in serious contention for the division, but all three are mathematically alive for an NFC Wild Card spot. Which, honestly, is just one more reason to hate math. Anyway, if New Orleans doesn’t make the playoffs, Dennis Allen is going to need to cash in those U-Haul groupons. Last week: No. 16

21. CINCINNATI BENGALS (5-6)

The last time the Bengals lost Joe Burrow for the year they drafted Ja’Marr chase and made it to the Super Bowl in the next. It’s not the worst possible future outcome for what has become a disaster of a season. CHICAGO BEARS (4-8)

Justin Fields is likely wrapping up his tenure as the Bears quarterback, but that doesn’t mean another team won’t be tossing a No. 1 pick to Chicago for his services next year. I’m looking hard at you, Atlanta Falcons. In Fields’ last 17 starts, he’s thrown for 2,970 yards, rushed for 1,257 yards, tossed 25 touchdowns, ran for eight touchdowns and thrown just 12 picks. Also, fun fact, on Monday night Matt Eberflus got the first NFC North victory of his (soon to be over) head coaching career. Last week: No. 25

23. Back in 1999 the then St. Louis Rams lost their QB, Trent Green, in the preseason and replaced him with some UDFA former grocery store bag boy named… check notes… Kurt Warner and that worked out OK. The only thing that could mess it all up is letting Mike Vrabel escape the building to return to the New England Patriots to replace Bill Belichick, as is the rumor circling. On the bright side, Tennessee should only make the deal for the Pats’ first round pick, which will be very high, just to keep the Patriots from taking an actual first round quarterback. Last week: No. 30

27.
