Before we close the book on College Football betting 2018 we’re going to take a look at the ‘national championship’ that matters—the top moneymakers against the pointspread. No matter the sport it’s important to understand team valuation. More specifically, it’s essential to know which teams are ‘profitable’ and which teams are ‘money losers’. This information has some intrinsic value but is most useful in isolating teams that are overvalued and undervalued relative to the pointspread. In this article we’ll look at the biggest college football betting money losers through the end of the 2018 season. You’ll also want to read yesterday’s article on the most profitable teams in college football this season.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL MONEY LOSERS

It won’t come as a shock that the two biggest money losers in college football also had losing straight up records. More surprising is that this is the exception for bad college football pointspread teams and not the rule. Of the top 13 money losing teams for the 2018 season eight had winning straight up records. North Texas has the dubious distinction of going 9-4 straight up but 4-9 against the spread losing -5.9 units on the season.

A good record doesn’t necessarily mean that team will make money. In fact, teams can be very good and still lose money. One sub category of teams that often win games and lose covers are teams with shutdown defenses and inept offenses. We’ll talk about one of those in our ‘bottom three’ of the year list.

LOUISVILLE (-11.1 UNITS)

Louisville was a bad team both straight up and against the spread. This was compounded by the fact that no one saw it coming. The Cardinals had been a very solid program over the past few seasons. In 2016, they went 9-4 overall with a 7-1 mark in the ACC. In 2017, they were 8-5 overall and 4-4 in conference. The team flatlined in 2018 going 2-10 overall and 0-8 in conference. They also managed only one pointspread cover for a dismal 1-11 record against the number. For those of you scoring at home—their only cover of the year was a 28-24 loss to Florida State as +5 underdogs. In other words, they were one point away from a winless year against the spread. There should be improvement in 2019 with a new coach. The program hired the very capable Scott Satterfield away from Appalachian State to replace Bobby Petrino who was fired in mid November after a 2-8 start to the year. He’ll have work to do on both sides of the ball. Louisville allowed 50+ points 7 times during the season so the defense is the place to start. Not that the offense did much right ranking 111 in total offense and 122 in scoring offense.

NEW MEXICO STATE (-9 UNITS)

The New Mexico State Aggies played as an independent in 2018 and struggled mightily going 3-9 SU and 2-10 against the spread. Their three straight up wins came against UTEP, Liberty and Alcorn State. The lowlight of the season was likely a 60-13 drubbing by Utah State—notable since they were beaten by the team that made the most money for bettors in 2018. NMSU lost their first four games, won two straight and then lost five of their final six. In the process, they were outscored by an average of more than 16 points per game. This debacle of a season came a year after they ended a 57 season bowl appearance drought, a consolation prize for a mediocre 6-6 season. Before that, they hadn’t played in a bowl game since the 1960 Sun Bowl.

SAN DIEGO STATE (-8 UNITS)

The San Diego State Aztecs had a nasty defense this season ranked #21 in overall defense and #32 in scoring defense giving up just 22.2 points per game. The hallmark of head coach Rocky Long’s team is a tenacious rushing defense and that was the case this year with the Aztecs ranked #7 in rushing defense allowing just 103.8 yards per game. The other hallmark of Rocky Long’s teams is an inept offense and that was also the case this year. SDSU ranked #119 in scoring offense scoring just 20.6 PPG and #111 in total offense putting up just 348.8 yards per game. Suffice to say when a team holds opponents to 22 PPG and still has a negative differential that they’re going to cost bettors a lot of money. San Diego State went 7-6 SU this year but just 3-10 against the spread.

The college football season is over and the Clemson Tigers have been crowned National Champions.
