Teddy Bridgewater had a number of options for 2019 including a chance to sign with his hometown Miami Dolphins where he would have most likely entered the season at #1 on the depth chart. Instead, he decided to stay put in New Orleans and serve as a backup to legitimate legend Drew Brees. Bridgewater signed a one year deal for $7.25 million<\/a> though incentives could push it as high as $12.5 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Teddy Bridgewater will be entering his sixth season as a NFL quarterback and its already been a very tumultuous ride. He was a first round draft choice out of Louisville in 2014 for the Minnesota Vikings and started the season as a backup to veteran Matt Cassel. The Vikings thought highly enough of Bridgewater to trade their second and fourth round picks to Seattle so they could move up and select him. He quickly took over the starting job and would eventually start 12 games that year earning a spot on the NFL’s All Rookie Team. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The following year, the led the Vikings to a divisional title and made the Pro Bowl. His stats regressed somewhat from his rookie season but he was still good enough that Minnesota considered him the quarterback of their future. That was until Bridgewater suffered a ‘non-contact’ injury to his left leg during a late August practice. Among other things, Bridgewater tore his ACL and dislocated his knee joint. He missed the entire 2016 season and would play only 1 game in 2017. Concerned about his future durability, the Vikings declined to exercise the fifth year option on Bridgewater’s contract and all of a sudden he was a free agent. He initially signed a one year deal with the New York Jets but immediately before the season he was dealt to the New Orleans Saint for a 2019 third round pick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bridgewater clearly likes the vibe in New Orleans<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I told my agents every time that I talked to them that I haven’t stopped smiling since I arrived.\u00a0They made playing football fun, they made learning the game fun \u2026 and that’s something I appreciate. I was able to be part of that for 18 weeks last season, and it was nothing but positive things that occurred.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unlike many players who are almost desperate to take on a starting role Bridgewater is smart about his career realizing that at age 26 he’s got plenty of time:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I think for me, you ultimately play this game to compete and to start. But at the same time, I’m still 26 years old. And the way I look at it is that I’ll have another opportunity to start in this league at some point.”So I look at it as this year I get the opportunity to continue to learn from a guy who’s gonna be a Hall of Famer. And I get to be a part of a team that was a call away from getting to the Super Bowl. And I get to work with a coaching staff that grinds on a daily basis, that spends numerous nights at that facility to make sure their players are in the best positions to win. I look at those things, and I tell myself, ‘Hey this is what I play this game for. And eventually my time will come that I can start.'”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bridgewater took the time to talk to the Dolphins and visit their practice facility but nothing he saw there changed his mind about returning to New Orleans. He showed considerable class in recounting his courtship with Miami, taking care to not say anything negative about the Dolphins’ roster or coaching staff.
