The Taça de Portugal itself dates back to 1938 but prior to that a similar competition called the Campeonato de Portugal was contested beginning in 1922. The defending champions are Desportivo das Aves who were something of an upset victor last season. The most successful team in the history of the competition is Benfica with 26 victories and 10 runner up finishes.

The game will take place at Estádio Nacional in suburban Lisbon. FC Porto finished second in the Portuguese Liga this season just 2 points back of Benfica and 11 points up on third place Sporting Lisbon. Sporting Lisbon has already taken the League Cup beating Porto in the final making this something of a ‘grudge rematch’. Porto certainly won’t want to end the season empty handed while it will be even more vindication for Sporting CP if they’re able to take two of the three national trophies. Although their performance in the League Cup is admirable, objectively speaking they were clearly a cut below Benifca and Porto. This is evident in the goal differential–+39 compared to FC Porto’s +54 and Benfica’s +72.

FC Porto essentially ‘snatched defeat from the jaws of victory’ in league play this year. They led for much of the season but a poor showing in important contests forced them to settle for second place. The most crucial game of the season could have been a home matchup against Benfica in which they blew a 1-0 edge to lose 2-1. Despite a furious pace down the stretch where they went undefeated in their last 10 with 9 wins and a draw it was not enough to deny Benfica the crown.

Sporting Lisbon has a slew of injuries heading into this game and will likely be without midfielders Francisco Geraldes, Rodrigo Battaglia, Stefan Ristovski and Cristian Borja. FC Porto is injury free but will be without midfielder Jesus Corona who is suspended for a late game red card last time out. In most situations, handicapping 101 dictates that in any ‘quick rematch’ situation you play against the team that won the first game. FC Porto beat Sporting in Liga play last Saturday winning 2-1 at Estadio do Dragao. Sporting was lucky to score even a single goal as they were credited with only 2 shots to 28 for their opponents. Porto also held a 61% to 39% possession edge. The depletion in the Sporting Lisbon midfield was clearly evident in that game and there’s no reason to think that it will be any different here. Given the statistical disparity just one week ago, the soccer odds showing Porto as a slight favorite look reasonable.

BET FC PORTO PK, -1/2 -119 OVER SPORTING LISBON
BET FC PORTO/SPORTING LISBON OVER 2, 2 1/2 -121

Get the latest soccer odds and props from all over the world–follow BetOnline.ag on Twitter!

It might not be quite as high profile of a competition as the Copa del Rey but Saturday’s Portuguese Cup…

[2

post-5585","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-sports
["GET
