The biggest event of Summer 2020–at least in the soccer world–will be the UEFA European Championships, known more commonly as Euro 2020. With an aging backline and a formidable group of competitors there’s a perception that defending champion Portugal is living on ‘borrowed time’ and are vulnerable. They’ll have no shortage of claimants to their crown but first there’s the formality of qualification. The Euro 2020 qualification games are going on this Summer on on Monday two intriguing teams will meet as Spain hosts Sweden at Madrid’s Estadio Santiago Bernab\u00e9u<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spain was expected to be a Euro 2020 contender but Sweden has been something of a surprise of late. They’ve gone unbeaten in their first three qualification matchups with home wins over Romania and Malta along with a 3-3 deadlock against regional rivals Norway. They’re well poised to qualify for the European Championships and their strong offensive output during the qualifying competition has only boosted their chances. Sweden has scored 8 and conceded 4 in the three games giving them 7 points and a +4 goal differential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spain has also shown well in their qualifying run with three wins in three games against Norway, Malta and the Faroe Islands. They’ve also scored 8 goals in the competition but have only conceded two giving them 9 points and a +6 goal differential. The game against Norway did give Spanish soccer boosters a bit of concern as they expected an easier outcome than the 2-1 result. Spain’s offensive catalyst is Iago Aspas who plays for Celta Vigo–who barely managed to survive relegation–in La Liga. Despite his weak team affiliation he’s scored 42 goals over two season which included a fair amount of time lost to injury. He’s got 17 goals playing for the national team and he’s an extremely dangerous offensive threat that can score at any time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Head to head play has been fairly evenly matched but worth noting that there hasn’t been a match between Spain and Sweden since 2008. Spain won a matchup in the European Championships that year but going back further the last 7 meetings stand at 3 wins for Spain, 2 wins for Sweden and a pair of draws. Taking a look at the Euro Qualifying soccer odds<\/a>, the total on the game looks a bit low given the offensive potency of the sides involved. We’ll look for Spain to take the victory and play the total accordingly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
