With the spectacle of Wimbledon and the epic final battle between Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic in the books the tennis world will be in sort of a ‘post major hangover’ for the next few weeks. While the competition will be at a lower profile until late August with the US Open this doesn’t mean that there’s not good tennis betting<\/a> opportunities on the board. In this preview we’ll look at a second round matchup in the Plava Laguna Croatia Open Umag which is being played this week in the beautiful coastal town of Umag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The more common name of the tournament is the ‘Croatia Open’ and dates back to 1990. It was originally known as the Yugoslavia Open and has been held every year since it’s debut. It’s currently part of the ATP Tour 250 which is the lowest tier of tournament events on the main ATP tour. Carlos Moya won the Croatia Open five times, more than any other player. In 2012, Marin \u010cili\u0107 became the first Croatian born player to win the event. A few years ago, the center court stadium was renamed to honor Croatian tennis legend Goran Ivani\u0161evi\u0107. The tournament is currently sponsored by Croatian hotel chain Plava Laguna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the grass courts of Wimbledon to the clay courts at Umag it’s a completely different surface requiring a different skill set. It’s one that 2017 Croatian Open champ Andrey Rublev likes a lot and is very adept on. Rublev took care of Robin Haase 6-3, 6-2 on Monday and his style should be effective here against Dusan Lajovic. Rublev has a powerful forehand with a long backswing and that kind of power is deadly on a clay court. Rublev is the world #76 player while Lajovic is #36. Lajovic was ranked as high as #23 earlier this year after his run to the finals of the Monte-Carlo Masters but on the year he has a record of 13-16. Based on a 12 year career without any tournament wins many are concluding his Monte-Carlo Masters performance as something of a fluke. Lajovic was summarily dismissed in the first round at Wimbledon losing to Hubert Hurkacz in four sets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The take on Rublev is that he’s a talented player but something of an underachiever. With 8 wins and 8 losses this season, he’s got a good opportunity to get on the right side of .500 with a strong run in this tournament. Neither player is of the level that they’ll be able to dominate their opponent but Rublev’s skill set is tailor made for a clay court. Look for him to win in 3 sets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
