The English Premier League isn’t the only major European circuit getting underway on Friday night. France’s top soccer league known as Ligue 1 also has one game on the docket to get their season started. In many ways, the respective qualitative status of the teams involve mirror that of the English Premier League game between Liverpool and Norwich City. In one corner, Lyon–more properly known as Olympique Lyonnais <\/em>was the third place finisher in Ligue 1 last season going 21-9-8 for 72 points and missing second place by just 3 points. Lyon scored 70 goals while conceding 47. In the other corner, Monaco who finished 8-12-18 and narrowly missed relegation as they finished in 17th place. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Monaco’s year was much worse than even the paltry description above suggests. It took them 23 games to get their first Ligue 1 win–the season started in mid August and they didn’t get their victory until February. In the process, they fired French soccer legend Thierry Henry as head coach. They hired Leonardo Jardim as Henry’s replacement only to fire him in October. Or so everyone thought–Monaco would reappoint Jardim shortly thereafter which isn’t exactly a vote of confidence for coach or a positive sign for the management of the club. The personnel is in a bit of disarray and there are suggestions that Captain Radamel Falco might be on his way out. Falco is likely Monaco’s best overall player along with former Arsenal\/Chelsea competitor Cesc Fabregas. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lyon caught a big break when Moussa Dembele decided to stay with the team. Dembele was a hot property during the transfer window with seemingly half the Premier League trying to land him, specifically Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United. Dembele is not the team’s only offensive weapon–Memphis Depay and Maxwel Cornet are strong players up front while midfielders Bertrand Traore, Houssem Aouar and Thiago Mendes are expected to contribute as well. Lyon looked porous defensively in the preseason as they gave up 11 goals in four matches. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not much confidence in Lyon on the road given their poor preseason performance. Monaco won the last meeting 2-1 in February and while Lyon is definitely the better team on paper they have a tendency to lose focus in situations like this one. That keeps us from wanting to lay the handicap price on the soccer betting odds<\/a> board to back Lyon. We’ll look for the game to go ‘Over’ the total.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
