The only thing that could change that dynamic would be if the Oakland Raiders could show some marked improvement. Otherwise, it’ll be the Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Chargers battling for the divisional crown with the Raiders and Denver Broncos bringing up the rear. Here’s our take on the NFL win totals for the division:

AFC WEST–NFL WIN TOTALS PREVIEWS

KANSAS CITY CHIEFS: Every reason to think that the Patrick Mahomes led Chiefs will put up insane offensive numbers again this year. Throw in tight in Travis Kelce and wide receiver Sammy Watkins and KC has an abundance of offensive weapons. On the downside, running back Kareem Hunt is gone though the Chiefs look to have good depth at the position. The Chiefs’ defense was very porous last year (#31 in total defense and #24 in scoring defense). The team is looking to improve the defense by ‘going younger’ changing formations from a 3-4 to a 4-3. Mahomes might have more challenges from opposing defenses now that there’s plenty of game film on him. KC will have the toughest non-division schedule in the league this year. The question now is how will all of this impact the team’s W/L record? The total looks to be right on the mark as I expect them to regress slightly to between 10 and 11 wins. We’ll call it 11 since we’re getting the better price on the ‘Over 10.5 wins’.

KANSAS CITY CHIEFS OVER 10.5 WINS +115

LOS ANGELES CHARGERS: The LA Chargers have something Kansas City doesn’t–a defense that finished top ten in both scoring defense and total defense last year. Phillip Rivers is 37 but playing better than ever and the team has brought in some talented QBs to back him up. Schedule is slightly tougher this year and the Chargers still have to prove they can win the big games. Overall, there’s a ton of talent on both sides of the ball and due to their defensive superiority the Chargers are our pick to win the division. They’ll also exceed their 10 win expectations.

LOS ANGELES CHARGERS OVER 10 WINS -110 (BEST BET)

OAKLAND RAIDERS: Raiders are a team full of ‘if’s’. They did a lot of work in the off season and the offense looks downright potent thanks to the addition of Antonio Brown, Tyrell Williams, Josh Jacobs, Hunter Renfrow along with offensive tackle Trent Brown on the offensive line. Quarterback Derek Carr finally has a competitive array of weapons to work with. A huge ‘if’ is on the defense where the Raiders were miserable last year. They need to improve from their 2018 ranking of #26 in total defense and dead last in scoring defense. Oakland focused on defenders in the draft including Clemson DE Clelin Ferrell and Mississippi State safety Jonathan Abram. Raiders should be better by virtue of increased points output and if the defense shows any type of gains they could be in for a big year. At worst, they look to be a better team than the 4 wins last year would suggest. O/U of 6 wins seems about right given all of the uncertainty but we’ll lean ‘Over’ due to the better moneyline price.

OAKLAND RAIDERS OVER 6 WINS +105

DENVER BRONCOS: Denver could have a rough season. Much depends on 34 year old Joe Flacco regains his elite form. In reality, his numbers over the past few years are no better than Case Keenum’s. At the very least, he’s got plenty of experience. If Flacco gets injured Denver’s QB situation could become ugly with unproven Stanford product Kevin Hogan and raw rookie Drew Lock. The good news is that Denver’s defense still has the potential to be one of the league’s best and new head coach Vic Fangio’s defensive pedigree should help things all the more. New offensive line coach Mike Munchak was a good hire and new offensive coordinator Rich Scangrello has plenty of upside but limited playcalling experience with none at the NFL level. Denver likely overachieved to 6 wins last year and they’llbe hard pressed to improve upon that record.

DENVER BRONCOS UNDER 7 WINS -110 (BEST BET)

Get the latest NFL football odds and information–follow BetOnline.ag on Twitter!

The AFC West looks to be a case of ‘the haves’ and the ‘have nots’ once again in 2019.
