This year it looks like more of the same. The Washington Redskins are a tough team to figure out but could see some improvement. ‘Improvement’ looks to be a long way off for the New York Giants who went 5-11 last year and clearly regressed in the off-season. The divisional NFL futures betting odds have the Eagles are a -125 favorite with the Cowboys right behind at +175.

NFC EAST–NFL WIN TOTALS PREVIEWS

DALLAS COWBOYS: There seems to be a bit of negativity in the sports betting ecosystem about the Cowboys’ chances for another strong season. Maybe it has to do with the Ezekiel Elliott holdout but there’s every reason to think that he’ll be in the lineup on opening day. If he did sit out the season it wouldn’t do him any good since he’d still have a year left on his contract when he was done. Former Boise State quarterback Kellen Moore takes over as offensive coordinator. The hope is that he can bring some of the passing attack potency of his college team to the Cowboys to help balance out their strong running game. The defense is very good and nothing suggests a regression over the off season. Aside from the possibility of the Washington Redskins showing modest improvement the qualitative dynamics of the division are still the same.

DALLAS COWBOYS OVER 9 WINS +110 (BEST BET)

PHILADELPHIA EAGLES: Can quarterback Carson Wentz stay healthy? For the Philadelphia Eagles sake he better. The team gave 26 year old Wentz a $128 million contract extension. There’s no question that Wentz has the skills but the Eagles need him to be durable and they no longer have Nick Foles waiting in the wings. Backups Nate Sudfeld and Clayton Thorson have considerable upside but aren’t ready to lead a franchise in the long term. Fortunately, the Eagles have plenty of talent around Wentz particularly led by Desean Jackson and newly acquired running back Jordan Howard. Eagles should be fine this year but the 2 win jump needed from their 9 win season last year to cover this price forces us to play the ‘Under’.

PHILADELPHIA EAGLES UNDER 10.5 WINS -145

WASHINGTON REDSKINS: A lot of personnel transition in the offseason and don’t forget that starting QB Alex Smith is gone for the year with a nasty leg injury. The extent of the injury is such that his ability to return to a high level is in question so Washington has to simultaneously hope for his return and plan for the future. The Redskins lost Jamison Crowder, Preston Smith, Zach Brown, and Ty Nsekhe to free agency. The hope is that they can ‘get younger’ while maintaining a high level of performance at their positions–they drafted very well picking up QB Dwayne Haskins, DE Montez Sweat, WR Terry McLaurin and RB Brice Love. The Skins have decent depth at quarterback despite Smith’s injury with Colt McCoy and Case Keenum joining Haskins on the depth chart. Haskins is the quarterback of the future and he’ll likely start at some point this year. Washington was 6-3 when Smith went down and if they can get some stability at quarterback could be good for a few more wins. Doubtful that they can hang with Dallas and/or Philadelphia but the 6.5 win total is a very realistic target and we’re getting a decent value on the ‘Over’.

WASHINGTON REDSKINS OVER 6.5 WINS +140 (BEST BET)

NEW YORK GIANTS: The team got a much needed boost thanks to Daniel Jones’ strong performance at QB in limited action in their preseason opener. Unfortunately, the season could be all downhill from here. The Giants are trying to rebuild but it doesn’t look like they have a plan. They essentially gutted the team and don’t appear to have done a good job replacing what they’ve lost. Among their losses were arguably their best players on offense and defense with receiver Odell Beckham, Jr. now in Cleveland and pass rusher Olivier Vernon there with him. The defense lost another key contributor with Landon Collins signing with Washington. GM Dave Gettleman’s plan is to let Jones watch for a year or two and keep Eli Manning as the starter. Don’t know if the fans have that much patience. Saquon Barkley is a franchise quality running back but everything else looks like a complete mess.

NEW YORK GIANTS UNDER 6.5 WINS -140 (BEST BET)

Get the latest NFL football odds and information–follow BetOnline.ag on Twitter!

The NFC East battle in 2018 came down to the the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles.
