The Jaguars went from making the AFC Championship Game and nearly beating the New England Patriots to get to the Super Bowl in 2017 to finishing 5-11 and dead last in the AFC South last season. Their point differential dropped by a stunning 220 points, but there is optimism the team could bounce back in a similar fashion in 2019. That’s why the Jaguars have the second-lowest Super Bowl betting odds in the AFC South.

Odds to Win Super Bowl LIV
Jacksonville Jaguars +2800

The preseason doesn’t typically mean much, but Jacksonville’s dismal performance in its first three preseason games is a little concerning. An offense that is supposed to be revamped now that Blake Bortles is gone has failed to impress, and the Jaguars have scored a grand total of 17 points in three games.

Offensive Outlook

Nick Foles will be the key to everything for Jacksonville. The Jaguars held out hope that Bortles could eventually be the guy for as long as possible, but the front office had to move on after he regressed last season.

Foles became a Philadelphia icon after leading the Eagles to their first Super Bowl in franchise history two years ago, and he will look to do the same with the Jaguars. He completed a whopping 72.3 percent of his passes last season, and Jacksonville would be ecstatic if he could put up similar numbers.

Unfortunately for Foles, he won’t have the same talent surrounding him in Jacksonville that he did in Philadelphia. The Jaguars’ leading receiver from last year is Dede Westbrook, and he needs to improve considerably if the offense is going to take off. DJ Chark has tremendous speed, but he had a very lackluster rookie campaign. Marqise Lee missed all of last season with a knee injury, so he is a wildcard coming into this season.

Jacksonville does have a potential franchise running back in Leonard Fournette. Fournette showed a lot of promise as a rookie, but injuries contributed to the LSU product having a disappointing 2018 campaign. He averaged just 3.3 yards per carry and lacked the top-end speed that made him such a weapon as a rookie.

There is a lot of promise for the offense if the younger players can play to their potential and Foles proves to be a significant improvement over Bortles, but there isn’t a proven commodity on this side of the ball. That’s why despite the potential, Jacksonville’s team win total is 7.5 wins.

Defensive Outlook

Frustration and freelancing led to Jacksonville’s defense posting poor numbers in 2018, but you could argue that this is the most talented defense in the league.

The defensive ends will keep opposing offensive tackles up at night. Calais Campbell made the Pro Bowl last season, but he might be the third-best defensive end on the roster by the end of the season. Josh Allen was taken as the 7th overall pick in this year’s draft and has been electric in the preseason, and Yannick Ngakoue is one of the five best defensive ends in the game. Jacksonville should be able to bring a lot of pressure.

Myles Jack is the centerpiece of the linebacking corps, and he is a Pro Bowl caliber player. However, the linebackers on either side of him are young and raw.

In the secondary, the safeties are league average, but the cornerbacks are both elite. AJ Bouye made a name for himself on Houston and is one of the top corners in the league, and Jalen Ramsey has all the makings of a shutdown corner. Ramsey is incredibly athletic and has a skillset unique to him.

Season Projection

Jacksonville’s defense has the potential to be a top-five unit once again. The Jaguars have elite talent at the positions that are the most important in the modern NFL, and all the right pieces are back from the defense that was so dominant two years ago.

The question is the offense. If the Jaguars can get even average production out of their offense, their defense is talented enough to carry them deep into the postseason.

Given how the offense has fared in NFL preseason betting, it’s a leap of faith to believe that Foles and company will have it all figured out in a few weeks. At 50-1, that would be worth the risk, but the current odds make it much harder to bet on Jacksonville.

Get the latest NFL football odds and information–follow BetOnline.ag on Twitter!

Some reversion to the mean was expected from the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2018, but even their most ardent skeptic would…

[129

post-6154","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-nfl
["GET
