The Dallas Cowboys haven’t made it to a Super Bowl in 24 years, but they are among the favorites per the Super Bowl betting odds coming into this season. Dallas nipped Philadelphia for the NFC East title last year, but once again they fell short in the Divisional Round. The franchise hasn’t won in the Divisional Round since 1995, and that was the season Dallas beat Pittsburgh in Super Bowl XXX.

Odds to Win Super Bowl LIV
Dallas Cowboys +2000

Philadelphia is the favorite to win the NFC East and one of the Super Bowl favorites after winning its first title two years ago, but Dallas isn’t too far behind in terms of the NFL betting odds.

Offensive Outlook

Ezekiel Elliott has been holding out in search of a new contract this offseason. Since entering the league in 2016, Elliott has been the league’s best running back, and Zeke is ready to move off his rookie deal and get some guaranteed money.

He has led the league in rushing yards per game in each of his three seasons, and he would have likely led the NFL in rushing each year if not for his six-game suspension in 2017. Elliott has reportedly been working out and staying in shape down in Mexico, but no one knows for sure how fit he is right now. He is expected to end his holdout and re-join Dallas prior to Week 1.

Whoever ends up running the ball for the Cowboys will have the benefit of running behind the best offensive line in the game. Dallas has put an emphasis on its offensive line, using three first round picks on offensive linemen earlier this decade, and all three of those players have made at least four Pro Bowls.

The biggest question continues to be the passing game. Dak Prescott has become the new Joe Flacco in that legions of fans are arguing whether he should be classified as an elite quarterback. Prescott has yet to really shine, but he hasn’t been bad in three seasons as the full-time starter either. His numbers have been pretty similar from season to season on the surface, but his QBR has dipped considerably from his rookie year.

Dallas’ front office decided to do what it could to put Prescott in a position to succeed. The Cowboys gave Jason Witten a nice chunk of change to come out of retirement and sign a one-year deal, and Randall Cobb was signed to be paired alongside No. 1 WR Amari Cooper. Michael Gallup could be the diamond in the rough though, as the Colorado State product showed some serious speed and ups as a rookie. Consider some NFL player props on Gallup early in the year.

Defensive Outlook

DeMarcus Lawrence was the one Cowboy that got paid this offseason. Lawrence signed a massive five-year extension with Dallas in early April, but the star pass rusher has yet to see the field as he continues to rehab from shoulder surgery. He is on pace to play in the season-opener, so that’s great news considering he is the star of their defense.

The Cowboys used three of their draft picks to shore up the defensive line rotation, adding defensive tackle Trysten Hill from UCF and defensive ends Joe Jackson and Jalen Jelks. Dallas added Robert Quinn to be the end opposite Lawrence, and that should lead to less double teams up front.

These linebackers are some of the best in the business. Leighton Vander Esch was a contender for Defensive Rookie of the Year, and Jaylon Smith rewarded the Cowboys for being patient with his rehab after a monster 2018 campaign. Sean Lee is the veteran leader of the unit, and they have great cohesion.

The secondary is the concern for Dallas this season. Opponents had a hard time running on the Cowboys, but the defensive backs were nothing special. Dallas finished 16th in the league in DVOA pass defense, and there is no star that is considered one of the best at his position. This secondary reaped the rewards of playing in the NFC East last season.

Season Projection

Dallas has what it takes to make a run. The Cowboys can run the ball, and they have one of the best front sevens in the league. The two biggest question marks are Prescott and the secondary. Prescott is entering a contract year, so he will be more motivated than ever, and the secondary issues can be covered up by the excellent pass rush.

This is a real contender with the potential to win it all, so Jerry Jones might get his wish. The Cowboys’ future odds are good value.

Get the latest NFL football odds and information–follow BetOnline.ag on Twitter!

Jerry Jones has said that he wants to do everything in his power to win a Super Bowl again.
