There is one fundamental truth about NFL football betting<\/a>: it pays to be a ‘contrarian’. Since NFL football is the most popular betting sport among North American fans the benefit of not ‘following the herd’ should be obvious. If you bet on popular teams, sides, totals or whatever you’re not going to get as much line value as you will by betting against them. It’s simple math combined with bookmaking theory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After looking at the list of ‘Most Bet’ and ‘Least Bet’ Super Bowl futures<\/a> teams that might be a rare exception to the ‘contrarian’ mindset. Not surprisingly, the most heavily bet teams to win Super Bowl LIV include the league’s elite-Kansas City, New Orleans, New England, Cleveland and Chicago. At BetOnline.ag 9% of all Super Bowl futures bets are on the Kansas City Chiefs. This is interesting because just minutes before I received the graphic below I was talking with a highly respected NFL bettor that lives in a big house on a golf course in Las Vegas. The topic of our conversation? How the Chiefs are drastically overvalued heading into the 2019 NFL season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looking through the rest of the ‘Most Bets’ list a few observations: New England would make me nervous due to the difficulty of winning back to back Super Bowl titles. Since 2000, it’s only been done once (by the Patriots in the 2004 and 2005). Another interesting tidbit–parity rules in the NFL. Since the 2000 Super Bowl (Super Bowl XXXIV) there have been 20 games played. These 20 Super Bowl Championships have been won by 12 different teams. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

While you might not want to pile on one of the ‘Most Bet’ teams there’s definitely ‘slim pickings’ among the ‘Least Bet’ teams. It appears the public doesn’t have much hope that Bruce Arians can transform Jameis Winston into an elite quarterback in Tampa Bay. The Miami Dolphins are by their own admission in ‘rebuilding mode’ which is why they have the lowest Over\/Under win total<\/a> of any NFL team at 4.5. Cincinnati also needs to start from scratch with the end of the Marvin Lewis coaching regime. The Arizona Cardinals might end up being the most entertaining team in the league to watch but not much interest in betting them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tennessee is an interesting team that could potentially surprise a lot of people. At any rate, it’s surprising that they’re among the ‘least bet’ teams. The Titans don’t have any big name superstars but they’re a team that is competent in just about every phase of the game. They had a winning record in 2018 (9-7) and a positive points differential–one of only 8 AFC teams that scored more points than they gave up. Only the Chicago Bears and Baltimore Ravens allowed fewer points per game than the Titans (18.9). They were particularly strong against the pass ranking #6 in passing yards per game against. The quarterback entry of Marcus Mariota and Ryan Tannehill doesn’t instill me with a lot of confidence but having a strong defense will take a lot of pressure off. At +8000, the Titans might just be worth a speculative play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
