Just when you didn’t think it could get any worse for the New York Jets. Things were bad enough for the Jets’ in head coach Adam Gase’s first year at the helm. The team blew a lead in their opening game and lost to the Buffalo Bills. Then starting quarterback Sam Darnold was diagnosed with mononucleosis<\/a>. His timetable for a return is still unknown but there’s a lot of talk about a possible return for New York’s Week 5 game against the Dallas Cowboys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite Darnold’s illness the Jets were reasonably confident with backup Trevor Siemian under center. Siemian had been the starter in Denver for two seasons and if nothing else was a capable fill in. Then ‘worst case scenario’ hit–Siemian suffered a brutal looking ankle injury late in the first half of the Jets’ loss to the Cleveland Browns. Siemian went down on a late hit from Browns’ defensive end Miles Garrett. His leg bent awkwardly and although he was quickly ruled out for the rest of the game he did manage to make it off the field under his own power. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Third string QB Luke Falk came on for the second half and played reasonably well under the adverse circumstances. Falk finished with 198 yards on 20 of 25 passing. On Tuesday, the ‘other shoe dropped’ when a MRI revealed torn ankle ligaments. Siemian was placed on season ending injured reserved and Falk named the starter for the Jets’ next game. Falk’s first start? On the road against the New England Patriots. At BetOnline.ag the NFL betting odds<\/a> have the Patriots installed as a -22.5 favorite with the total set at 44.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Making matters worse for the Jets is that they’ve suffered a rash of injuries in addition to their quarterbacking situation. WR Quincy Enuwa and OL Brent Qvale were already on injured reserve. Linebacker Avery Williamson was lost for the year during training camp. Tight end Chris Herndon, linebacker Brandon Copleland are both suspended for the first four games of the season. DL Nathan Shepherd is suspended for the first six games of the season. Linebacker Jordan Jenkins has been downgraded to ‘Out’ against the Patriots. DE John Franklin-Myers, linebacker CJ Mosley and linebacker Quinnen Williams are all listed as ‘questionable’.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps the only good news out of the Jets’ camp on Tuesday concerned Darnold. He returned to the team’s facility<\/a> for the first time since his mono diagnosis. That doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll be back in the lineup any earlier but it’s a good sign. Head coach Gase said simply: “He’s feeling better. The doctors are letting us know how to proceed with him.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New York’s 0-2 start along with their injury struggles have taken a toll on the Jets’ NFL futures odds<\/a>. They’re now a +3300 choice to win the AFC East, a +8000 choice to win the AFC Championship and a +15000 long shot to win the Super Bowl. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
