It’s going on four years now since Leicester City shocked the world by winning the English Premier League Championship. The team has been competitive since then but nowhere near the top of the table. In the three seasons since their title run they’ve finished 12th, 9th and 9th. It’s not like Leicester City management has been content with that–since Claudio Ranieri won the Premiership Title they’ve been through a total of five managers counting caretakers. Brendan Rodgers is now the man in charge at King Power Stadium and early returns are favorable though he’s under a lot of pressure as it is evident that Leicester management expects more than also ran status.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Foxes are currently in third place in the Premiership with 11 points though they’ve got plenty of company. Arsenal and West Ham United also have 11 points but an inferior goal differential. AFC Bournemouth is right behind with ten and then there’s a huge pack of 8 teams with 7 and 8 points behind them. The goal differential is a concern–Leicester City has been very sound defensively this year and their five goals allowed is tied with Liverpool for the low mark in the league. Their 8 goals scored is the problem–they’re simply not going to be able to compete for the top tier spots on the table unless they get more out of their offense. The teams they are nominally chasing–Manchester City and Liverpool–have scored 24 and 17 goals respectively in league play. The result is the two top teams have goal differentials of +12 and +18.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To be fair<\/a>, it’s a tough balance to maintain. Clearly, Rodgers would like his team to score more goals but not at the expense of winning games. Getting maximum points out of every game is far more important than an impressive goal tally. Then again, if Leicester City is to have designs on being a top of the table contender they have to do what Liverpool and Newcastle City do–take care of business on both ends of the field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Although Leicester City has lost only once this year there’s a sense that they need to develop more of a ‘killer instinct’. It just won’t work for the Foxes to not drop points in \u2018winnable\u2019 games like this one. Leicester has lost only once this year, a 1-0 setback at Manchester United. A draw at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea is not unforgivable but they needed a better result than the scoreless draw in their home opener against lowly Wolverhampton. They\u2019ve looked much better in their last two home fixtures, beating Bournemouth 3-1 and Spurs 2-1. If they’re going to run down the top teams in the league they can’t be content with draws against inferior competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Leicester City should take the victory here but their offense is not to be trusted at this point.
