The Cleveland Browns downing the Baltimore Ravens might have been surprising, but the outcome was never in doubt. If you’d taken the Ravens and the points, you probably knew you’d lost your money by the third quarter.

BAD BEATS: NFL WEEK 4
BY ADAM GREENE

Same for the Los Angeles Rams’ 55-40 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Rams were 9-point favorites on Friday and once the Bucs got up 21-0, that money was long gone.

New Orleans Saints 12, Dallas Cowboys 10? It doesn’t make the cut because do you believe for a second that Jason Garrett was playing for anything other than a field goal on Dallas (-2.5)’s final possession?

Nope, only one game qualifies for our Bad Beat of Week 4 and you have none other than they greatest head coach and quarterback combo in the history of the game to blame.

The New England Patriots came into their road game against the Buffalo Bills as a solid seven-point favorite for good reason. Brady is 31-3 all-time against the Bills and had won five straight over the only team playing in New York State coming into Sunday. Since 2000, the Patriots are 34-5 against Buffalo.

The Bills did roll in 3-0, but their victories were over the New York Jets, the New York Giants and the Cincinnati Bengals, not exactly a murderer’s row. But Buffalo is building something and Sean McDermott is a good head coach that gets his team ready to play.

But this was the Patriots’ steamroller coming into town. In three consecutive weeks, New England had scored 33, 43 and 30 points on offense. Defensively, they’d given up a total of 17 points all season. Again, they were playing dumpster fire teams; the Pittsburgh Steelers, Miami Dolphins and the Jets, but they did what good teams do, dominate underdogs.

So what the hell went wrong Sunday?

If you laid your cash down on Pats -7, you were all set for your payout. Planning what you were going to do with the cash. Which restaurant would get your celebratory feast. Entering the fourth quarter, New England was up 16-10, just a point away from covering. Six seconds into the fourth, Buffalo starting quarterback Josh Allen leaves the game with a concussion. Now you’ve got Matt Barkley under center for the next 14:54 of game time.

One Patriots field goal, one Barkley pick six coming in cold off the bench and you’re ordering from the good wine list. Only, you know what happened because nothing happened. The greatest quarterback in the world went three-and-out on his next two possessions and followed that with a five-play drive that gained all of 20 yards on his third.

Barkley did deliver his interception, as you knew he would, with 1:27 to go in the game, but Jamie Collins only returned in 11 yards to midfield. Brady came in, took three knees and also your money. As bad beats go, it was lazy, achingly slow and kept your hope alive until the last 90 seconds. Just brutal.

Get the latest NFL football odds and information–follow BetOnline.ag on Twitter!

BetOnline.ag on Instagram–Follow for the latest odds, stats and information!

We had plenty of shocking results and stupid finishes Sunday, but only one game counts as a bad beat.
