The Bulldogs are expected to steamroll the Vols but maybe the extra week helped Tennessee sort out their problems? We’ll find if they’re able to compete and at least cover in this spot.

GEORGIA BULLDOGS AT TENNESSEE VOLUNTEERS
CFB ODDS: GEORGIA -25
CFB TOTAL: 51.5

WHY THE BULLDOGS WILL COVER THE SPREAD

Tennessee is a really bad team. Let’s start there. The Vols lost in Week 1 at home to Georgia State, a team which has subsequently lost to Western Michigan and Texas State. Tennessee lost to the BYU team which has been hammered by Utah and Washington, and then lost to Toledo in Week 5.

Tennessee scored just three points against Florida in its most recent game. The crazy statistic from that game? The Vols’ number of turnovers – four – exceeded their amount of points. Three interceptions and a lost fumble created a miserable day for an offense which shows absolutely no signs of improving. The really alarming aspect of Tennessee’s no-show on offense this season is that it has a quarterback who started most of the team’s games last year, in 2018. Jarrett Guarantano could be forgiven for not playing well last year, in the first season under new head coach Jeremy Pruitt. However, he had a full offseason in which to grasp the new dimensions of Pruitt’s offensive system. He had eight months in which to grow and develop and nothing has happened. One could even make the argument that Tennessee’s offense has actually gotten worse this year.

Georgia will not allow more than 10 points maximum to Tennessee, maybe only seven or three. Georgia just needs to score a fairly modest 35 points to feel good about its chances of covering the large 25-point spread.

The other thing to note is that Georgia’s offense struggled against a very good Notre Dame defense in Week 4. After a week off, the Georgia offense should be ready to play a better game and Tennessee isn’t nearly as good on defense as Notre Dame is.

WHY THE VOLUNTEERS WILL COVER THE SPREAD

The noticeable flaw with Georgia is that the Bulldogs, unlike their main contenders in the Southeastern Conference, do not have a high-powered passing game. Georgia would like to run the ball and overpower the opposition. Unlike LSU and Alabama, the Bulldogs can’t overwhelm defenses with the passing game. It can certainly hit big plays through the air but only after setting up the running game to get defenses off balance.

Few would debate the notion that Tennessee won’t score a lot in this game. However, Georgia might not score that much, either. The Bulldogs could try to run the ball all night, use the clock, shorten the game, and be perfectly happy to win a 27-7 or 24-3 game. That would be good news for Vols backers.

TAKING A LOOK AT THE TOTAL

It looks like the Vols are thinking about making a change at quarterback but that probably won’t matter. They won’t score much at all. It comes down to whether Georgia can roll up a big number. Given how much the Vols’ defense is likely to be on the field in this game, it will probably get worn out in the second half.

Georgia could get into the 40’s but they’re also a team that cares more about the wins than style points. Unless the Vols give up huge runs for touchdowns series after series, we should see the Bulldogs try to shorten this game. That likely leads to an under.

PICK: BULLDOGS 42, VOLUNTEERS 3

Get the latest college football odds and information–follow BetOnline.ag on Twitter!

BetOnline.ag on Instagram–Follow for the latest odds, stats and information!

The Georgia Bulldogs and Tennessee Volunteers both return from their bye weeks for this showdown.
