College Gameday would have likely been in Columbus for a huge showdown between the Ohio State Buckeyes and Wisconsin Badgers this week, but a funny thing happened on Saturday. Wisconsin lost to lowly Illinois despite being favored by more than 30 points per the college football betting odds<\/a>, and many are now doubting the Badgers chances against the Buckeyes this weekend. A win would vault Wisconsin back in the race for the College Football Playoff, but a loss would eliminate any chance of the Badgers making the CFP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Buckeyes have smashed each of their opponents by at least 24 points, but Wisconsin will be the toughest foe they have faced. Even with the shocking loss to Illinois, the Badgers are the second-best one-loss team in the country per SP+ (No. 7 overall), and this defense has been fantastic. Wisconsin has held four opponents scoreless already this season, but no one is expecting that against Ohio State.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

RECENT HISTORY<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Ohio State has won nine of its last ten games against Wisconsin, and the Buckeyes have won the last six in this series too. The Badgers have kept the game within a touchdown in five of those last six, with the notable exception being the 59-0 thrashing they received at the hands of Ohio State in the 2014 Big Ten Championship Game. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

WHEN WISCONSIN HAS THE BALL<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

There\u2019s no secret as to what the Badgers want to do when they have the ball. Paul Chryst wants to run the ball on first, second, and third down, and he has just the tools to succeed. Jonathan Taylor has been the best running back in the country through the first half of the season, and he is running behind a magnificent offensive line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Taylor was seen as a dark horse Heisman Trophy candidate, and he was in the top five of the Heisman Trophy betting odds<\/a> last week. The loss to Illinois has likely doomed his chances to win the award, but he can still make a statement with a big game against Ohio State\u2019s defense this week. Taylor has already run for 957 yards and 15 touchdowns this season, and he has become a bigger threat in the passing game, catching 16 passes for 138 yards and four scores. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unfortunately for the Badgers, Ohio State might have the best defense in the country. The Buckeyes are allowing a scant 3.4 yards per play, and their defense is ranked No. 1 in the nation per SP+. They have given up 2.6 yards per run this season, and Ohio State is probably going to force Jack Coan to beat them with his arm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coan has been sharp since winning the job over Alex Hornibrook in spring practice, and he has a better arm than the previous starter. However, he has had the benefit of using play action to devastating effect. Coan only has one real weapon in the receiving game, wide receiver Quintez Cephus, and if they can\u2019t find success, it might be a long afternoon for this offense. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

WHEN OHIO STATE HAS THE BALL<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Justin Fields is looking to become the first quarterback to win the Heisman Trophy at Ohio State since Troy Smith won the award last decade, and he is having a fantastic year. He doesn\u2019t have gaudy numbers, but he continues to put up a ton of points with this offense, making him a stalking horse per the Heisman Trophy betting odds<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fields has completed 70.7 percent of his passes for 1,492 yards this season. He has thrown 22 touchdowns against just one interception, and he has also run for 291 yards and eight scores. His legs make this running game one of the most formidable in the nation, as J.K. Dobbins and Master Teague III have run for 1,469 yards and are averaging over 7.0 YPC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Badgers have yet to face an offense anything close to this in 2019. The best offense they have faced this season is Michigan, and the Wolverines are rated 52nd in SP+. Ohio State is the first opponent that can test Wisconsin on the ground or in the air, so we\u2019ll see how good Jim Leonhard\u2019s defense is on Saturday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

PREDICTION<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

I expect Ohio State to smash Wisconsin. This Badgers defense is not great, and the Buckeyes should handle Taylor on the ground. This will be a statement game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
