Sunday NBA basketball betting<\/a> action features six games on the board and in this preview we’ll look at the non-conference game at Madison Square Garden between the New York Knicks at Sacramento Kings. Neither team has done much in the early going–the Knicks are where they were for much of last season at the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings with a 1-5 SU record. The Kings are tied with the New Orleans Pelicans for the worst record in the West, also at 1-5.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the advantages that we have as sports bettors is that we’re able to tell when teams are starting to improve before it starts to translate into wins and losses. When a ‘losing team’ starts to cover pointspreads is means a couple of things might be happening: the team is getting better and is competitive in games that they would have been blown out in previously. Additionally, the public perception of the team is so negative that linesmakers have to ‘shade’ lines in the losing team’s favor to attract action. Often, both happen at the same time and that might be what we’re seeing with the Knicks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sacramento, on the other hand, is in a pointspread situation that most of the time should be considered a negative. The Kings had opened the season losing their first five games and failed to cover in each. The finally got their first win\/cover of the year at home against the Utah Jazz on Friday. That’s a nice victory to be sure but it’s not enough to negate the negatives they demonstrated during their season opening losing streak. They failed to cover in just about every possible situation–on the road against a ‘beatable’ opponent (Phoenix), on the road against a superior opponent (Utah) and at home in a pair of spots as short to medium underdogs (Portland, Denver) and at home as a -7 point favorite (Charlotte).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So what does it mean when a team seldom covers in losses? As was the case with the Knicks it can mean a couple of things. One is that a team is overvalued in the eyes of the public and that’s reflected in the betting line. That’s probably true to some extent with Sacramento. The more alarming possibility is that this type of team loses interest in games unless they’re in a position to win. The Kings lost their first four games of the season by double digits. Obviously, this could be a function of variance but it’s worth keeping an eye on. Sacramento will play three straight on the road as well as four of five as they return home for a one off game against Portland before facing the LA Lakers on November 15. The upcoming three games will say much about the competitive spirit of this Kings’ team as they play at New York, Toronto and Atlanta. The effort they put in against ‘beatable’ opponents such as the Knicks and Hawks will be extremely edifying and could help get a handle on some of the ’emotional\/subjective’ factors that make up the Sacramento roster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sum total of all of this? In a matchup between teams with losing records we’d much rather back the team with the better pointspread mark. The Knicks have covered 4 of 6 despite a 1-5 SU record. They’re also 3-1 ATS on the road while Sacramento was non competitive in both of the road games they’ve played thus far losing by 29 at Phoenix and 32 at Utah. Now they make the long trip to New York after playing in Salt Lake City on Friday night to face a Knicks team that could provide little intrinsic motivation. Looks like a perfect spot for the hard trying Knicks to pick up a win. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
