Is the Heisman Trophy race finally settled? It very well might be after last week\u2019s performances. Joe Burrow met Tua Tagovailoa in a high-stakes shootout and LSU won much thanks to Burrow\u2019s magical play. Now he\u2019s got the clear-cut inside track to the award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When you take a look at the cumulative stats, the LSU quarterback has thrown for 33 touchdowns. 3200 yards and just four interceptions. He\u2019s also rushed for 189 yards and three scores. The numbers are impressive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Beyond that, it\u2019s Burrow\u2019s performance in the signature games that\u2019s likely to win him the award. On Saturday, Burrow was 31 of 39 for 393 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions (plus 64 rushing yards) against the Alabama Crimson Tide, leading LSU to a 46-41 win. That\u2019s clearly moved Burrow to the top of the Heisman race without any question. Only an injury or a loss \u2013 combined with a surge from Justin Fields of Ohio State \u2013 could realistically deny him the Heisman at this point. This award is on lockdown until further notice. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Oklahoma quarterback has thrown for 24 touchdowns and only four interceptions, completing 73 percent of passes, notching over 2,700 passing yards. Hurts has also put together 869 rushing yards and 15 rushing touchdowns. He accounted for five touchdowns \u2013 three passing, two rushing \u2013 this past weekend against Iowa State. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
While the numbers look good, the Sooners have one loss on the season while LSU has not. With Burrow flourishing against Alabama, it is harder to see a path for Hurts to win the Heisman unless LSU somehow falters. Also notable: Texas is struggling this season, which means that if Oklahoma faces Texas in the Big 12 Championship Game, it won\u2019t be as big a deal. He just lacks the signature outings against top-notch competition that Burrow has delivered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The runner-up in last year\u2019s Heisman race has thrown for 31 touchdowns and only three interceptions this season, with over 2,500 yards passing, 71 percent completions, and two rushing touchdowns. Tagovailoa threw for 418 yards with four touchdowns and only one interception, putting up 41 points against LSU in the game of the year in college football. Yet, the fact that Tagovailoa and Alabama lost to LSU, plus the fact that LSU quarterback Joe Burrow played even better than Tua did, makes Tagovailoa a longshot to win the Heisman at this point. This was Tua\u2019s shot. Alabama\u2019s schedule has been criticized all season long and it won\u2019t help here that Tagovailoa and Alabama struggled in this contest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Ohio State quarterback has thrown for 27 touchdowns and only one interception, over 1,850 passing yards and 68 percent completions. Fields has compiled over 340 rushing yards with 10 rushing touchdowns. He\u2019s coming off another impressive showing as he and the Ohio State offense put up 73 points this past weekend against Maryland. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Fields, like Tua Tagovailoa and Jalen Hurts, had a really good game in which his team\u2019s offense scored a ton of points (at least 41 for all three teams). However, because of what Joe Burrow did in Tuscaloosa, he lost ground in the Heisman race and needs something remarkable to change the debate. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The good news for Fields, relative to Tua and Hurts, is that he has high-profile games against Penn State and Michigan coming up, and then possibly an unbeaten Minnesota team on Dec. 7 in the Big Ten Championship Game. He can still use those to make his case. If Fields is awesome in all three games, he is the one guy who could make a run at Burrow. Not Hurts, not Tua.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
