Now that Ron Rivera has gotten the ax, the question has come up as to who will be the next head coach to be fired? Cleveland Browns head coach Freddie Kitchens and New York Giants head coach Pat Shurmur have been on the hot seat all season long. Now they\u2019re joined by Philadelphia Doug Pederson, who might also have a short leash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
With props on the board<\/a> on each coach, who is likely to stay and who is likely to get fired?<\/p>\n\n\n\n It is true that the Giants\u2019 front office recently declined to give Shurmur a vote of confidence this week and that the Giants have been terrible this year. However, the team just did draft Daniel Jones and while Jones cooled off after a hot start to the 2019 season, that isn\u2019t nearly enough time to arrive at a clear and firm verdict on his talent and NFL readiness. Does that mean it\u2019s too soon to put a grade on Shurmur\u2019s coaching ability too?<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Giants are not in a good spot and they\u2019ve become less competitive as the weeks have gone on, but we knew this roster was bereft of talent. Could they really fire a coach after two seasons again after they did with Ben McAdoo in 2017? If so, future coaches are going to be less likely to take the Giants job if they think they won\u2019t be given three seasons to turn a franchise around. <\/p>\n\n\n\n At the same time, Shurmur hasn\u2019t really done much to develop this team. Other than Jones, there aren\u2019t a lot of spots where you look as see development. If the Dallas Cowboys fire Jason Garrett, the Giants are likely to pounce as he has a much better track record than Shurmur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Although the oddsmakers think that Kitchens has a good shot to return, the better bet here might be on \u2018no\u2019. The Browns have had a rough season and there have been bigger problems than a bad record. Kitchens has shown that he\u2019s in over his head multiple times, be it with a draw call on fourth-and-eight or wearing the \u201cSteelers Started It\u201d t-shirt. Overall, the team has not progressed under his watch and unless this team wins out, he\u2019s going to fail to deliver on a winning season too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n With guys like Ron Rivera out there, don\u2019t be surprised if the Browns move on from Kitchens quickly. He just hasn\u2019t done much to show that he deserves to keep the job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This one looks easy but Eagles fans are starting to get concerned. A team that was supposed to have Super Bowl aspirations couldn\u2019t even beat Miami last week and has just five wins through 12 games. Is it Carson Wentz? Is it Jim Schwartz? Is it Pederson? Fingers are being pointed and in Philadelphia, fans have very little patience and prefer heads to roll quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n At the same time, Pederson won a Super Bowl for the Eagles, the first and only coach in franchise history to bring a Super Bowl trophy to Philadelphia. That will certainly buy him one more season, if not two. He should be given every reasonable chance to regroup until it is beyond obvious he can\u2019t repair the team. The issue is that if the team continues to tank down the stretch of the season \u2013 especially with such an easy schedule \u2013 there will be concerns that he\u2019s lost the team.
